Can someone tell me if the width of a Task Force rear axle is the same or close to the rear axle width of an AD truck. Would a Task Force axle fit under an AD truck with out any major problems.

It's nearly identical in width. 1951-54 AD trucks use the same axle shafts as the 1955-59 Task Force trucks. The 3rd member from the task force trucks will fit all the the AD 1/2 ton trucks if you just want to go to an open driveline. The hinge part of the rear spring mounting needs to be welded up.

If you are talking about a 3/4 or 1 ton the job is even easier.

Sounds too easy! Basically you are aying thatI can keep my same axle housings and spring perches and shocks if I just change the center section. My truck is a half ton, but don't know what the donor axle is from, be it a half or three-quarter ton. I guess I can just check the ratio of axle to u-joint. thank you.

as wdoftexas stated, be sure to weld the hinges, otherwise, the first time you hit the brakes, the driveshaft will be pulled out to the tranny and you'll hear a noise similar to that of a pair of skeletons fornicating on a tin roof in a hail storm. been there. mike

Sounds like its too easy! Can't believce it!! Just to set me straight, the hinge is the pivot point on the axle where the springs attach, am I correct? Thanks a ton guys. I'll be back.

If your axle is from a 1/2 ton it will have only 6 lug bolts on each wheel. If it is from a 3/4 or 1 ton it will have 8 lug bolts on each wheel and you need to trade it for one from a 1/2 ton and proceed as mentioned above.

Remember to re-arch the springs if you go from torque tube to Hotchkiss. Or add a 5 bar set up to compensate for loss of torque tube. .
. The axle I removed from a 57 task force appears to be 6" wider than an Advance Design. Pumpkin is the same at housing.
