I just ordered a wiring harness from Jim Carter's for my '39 ton and a half. This wiring harness was listed for a 1/2 ton but will fit (with the exception of taillight) a 1 1/2 ton, right? Are their wiring harnesses good?

I got my harness for my 52 from Jim Carter about a year ago. It is the repro of original(type #1 in the catalog). It was made by Vintage Wiring of Maine. It looks good and seems to be of good quality, however the instructions were incomplete as they refer to a diagram which was not included. Also, two of the wires were numbered wrong which caused some aggrivation untill some folks on this site got me headed in the right direction. I've had no problems since.

Was it a fairly simple setup? We just ripped out the old harness in my '39 and cut most of the wires in the process, so we have no pattern and I have never wired anything before. It cant be all that hard, right?

If I were a betting man I would bet the wiring harness sold by Jim Carter comes from Rhode Island wiring or Y & Z.

In either case they come with a wiring diagram that is simple and easy to follow.

Thanks for all the help. By the way, for the taillight wire I just add to it on the end to compensate for the extra length on a 1 1/2 ton right?

That is they easy way and in your case probably the best. I would add the extra somewhere in the middle so that the wires at the ends are matching not causing confusion for repairing later.

If you have a shop manual there should be a schematic in there. I did my 49 without buying a harness, just buying the wire and connectors. I did one wire at a time but if you have scrapped the existing harness then it would be good to have a schematic. There are schematics being offered frequently on the Internet but don't know if they have them for 39s. BTW the wiring on the 49 was very simple and I am certain that the 39 would be as easy. To add confusion to the issue I used only black wires from the fusebox forward. Reason being is they only go to the lights and horn and between the generator and the regulator. The longest is about 4 feet. If someone cannot trace the circuit....! Of course I used colored under the dash and to the rear lights.

Thanks, but we already ordered the Jim Carter Harness. I want my truck to be exact original, and if I tried to wire it myself, I would probably mess it up and burn the truck up. We bought 2 more trucks last week, so I may try wiring them myself. Thanks, Bob
