Hi Chevrolet,

Unscrew the connection to the transmission. Look inside the cable and see if the felt washer/seal is present. If this is not corrected the cable will feed the oil up to the speedometer and cause damage.

I'm not aware of any source. A good thick piece of felt would work nicely. A tiny hole in the center and outer edge cut to fit inside the round nut.

ray,

still too cold to make the walk, yet (I don't like it when it isn't at least 75f outside... laugh )...

so the felt is clamped by the cable retaining nut to the face of the speedometer outlet of the transmission...

how thick is thick?..1/8" or 1/4"?..

will cork work?..

Hi Chevrolet,

Don't want to hear your complaining. We have 7 inches of snow covered by 2 inches of solid ice and constant freezing temperature. I have not left the driveway in three days and won't be able to again today.

I would use about 1/4 thick felt. If it is too thick you won't be able to start the nut. I would question the use of cork. Most of it would crumble and make a mess.

Chevrolet, I used a piece of 1/4 inch felt and it worked great no more drips. You could just move to sunny SOCAL it's a cold day when it is 60 here, the weather whimps won't go outside unless it is at least 70 and then they take a coat. I was born North Dakota where summer is the only 2 days of the year you can't drive a snowmobile. bigl

I was assigned to South Dakota for three years. Most of my time was on the road and about 1/2 of that at night. When I arrived it was described as: "9 months of winter and 3 months when it was tough to get your sled around."

Hi Chevrolet -I had the same problem on my 32.I did fit a seal behind the nut(made from leather) and it did the trick;however I also found that the gear in the housing has a reverse groove cut into it.If the bushing is worn the increased space will allow the oil to pass by the shaft and bushing and then it will follow the cable. This can be corrected by replacing the bushing and checking the "pencil" gear groove to be sure it has not worn out. This is the same way that the input shaft on an 18 wheeler trans works as most dont have a front seal.WOW!! Chevrolet sure had some advanced engineering.

thanks for all the advice, fellas...

well, I'm satisfied with the day...it warmed up to the mid sixties...and there wasn't anything left of whatever was around that speedometer connection...so I cut a felt washer about 3/4" diameter and 1/4" thick...seems like it should work like ray said...

Removal of the speedo gear is not too difficult. First jack up one of the rear wheels. A floor jack and then supported with a jack stand is best. It is only necessary to get one wheel high enough to be able to rotate it. Then drain any oil in the ball housing or have a catch pan under the drip zone. Remove the cap on the passenger side of the housing. Push on the drivers side while rotating the wheel or drive shaft. If the gear does not come out rotate the wheel in the opposite direction. Eventually the shaft will come out. It is easier if the u-joint has been removed.
