Location of VIN # other than on firewall, glovebox door or driver door?

Only place VIN # was located was on a steel plate riveted to the front driver's door post.

I don't remember a 49 having a VIN, but that don't mean they didn't have one, in Texas the state recognized the engine number stamped on the boss near the distributor as the number used for registration.

Actually, since VIN#s did not exist in the 40s and 50s, there may be a confusion of terms here. Chevy placed a manufacturer's ID code on the plate on the driver's door post. That was the ONLY location for the ID number on the Advance Design trucks.

Different states used different numbers for titling and registration of vehicles. Some used the manufacturer's ID and some used the engine number.

Jeff is right. The 1950 serial number should read something like this:
3HJA00001
3 = assembly plant (St Louis, MO)
H = year (1950)
J = series (3100)
A = Month of production (January)
00001 = consecutive sequence number

Here in Aus they only recognize a chassis or frame # for registration which apparently was not stamped on the US versions of the same vehicles.
My 2 and all the chevs I have seen have a # stamped near the steeringbox arm position on left rail. They also use a different sequence to the US models.
To make matters worse GM had a fire in the records department abt 1955 which destroyed most records prior to then.
