Does anyone out there know the correct dimensions for the boards that are used to foor the older pickups? I am looking for the 64 short stepside measurements in particular. I can order the kits but like woodworking anyway and thought I would try it myself.

I don't know if this will help you but the boards in my 72 are 6.25 inches across the face. with .250 deep and .50 wide knotch on each side, .250 inches from the edge there is a further knotch another .25 x .25 for the rail. in the middle I have two boards that are 4.25 across the face . If I find out any more, i'll let you know. Andre

I was planning on using pine right now as the rest of the body is a "driving restoration". It seems to run fine and mechanically is sound. I am going to drive it off and on during most of the early stages. I've had this truck since high school (1975) and wasn't as kind as I should have been back then. There is a lot of sentimental value in this old girl and now I am ready to start making her look like the factory intended her to look. I would really like to use a wood plank bed instead of plywood.

I think pine was the wood used by Chevy, however it was painted I believe. This is the way the bed wood of my '55 was when I got it.
Do you have metal strips also?
I have seen guys use exterior grade plywood and route out some grooves for the strips so they are recessed into the wood. Then you paint it all, unless you are using ss strips. Once it is painted you can't tell it from individual boards.

imcelt2, I thought chevy used a lot of southern pine for bed wood... also, I've used brush-on rust-o-leum black exterior paint for working truck bed wood...it's proved for me very durable from sun, rain, & abrasion... epi

Thanks a lot to everyone for the info and the links. I'm going to start shopping today for the wood. The metal strips and bolt kits are ordered. this old truck may not know how to act with a new bed. Now on to the radiator, but that is for another topic.
