There is a magazine out called "Collectible Automobile" , issue dated Feb. 2004. It has a good article on the AD Chevy trucks. In the article there are renderings and a picture of a clay model, all done in 1940. They show most of the basic lines of the AD Panel truck. The article also states that were it not for WWII, we would have had the AD design available in 1942! I find this very fascinating. Previous to this, I had though that the AD design was all carried out in 1946.

Any special name for the 55 (2nd) to 59? What year did the "Apache" name start? I have a 55 (2nd) and I think it just has a number (3600, 3/4 ton) to go by, is that right?

Does anyone know where the name Task Force came from ? It sounds a bit military and I wonder if it is in recognition of the contribution the Chevy trucks made in one of the wars.

old216, don't know the whole answer to your question, but "task force" is a group of navy ships...probably chosen by the marketing department to project a strong image, but I'm just guessing... epi

Apache was not a truck series. It was a name identifying certain trucks produced within the Task Force series. In 1960, it was an optional trim package designation.

The Apache Series name was first used in 1958 to identify the Light Duty trucks. Medium Duty were called the Viking Series and the Heavy Duty trucks were called the Sparton Series. They were all still part of the Task Force line which ran from '55 Second thru '59.

Thanks for the update. Am I correct in saying that all '55, 2nd series to '57 trucks were only called "task force"?

I really must get a copy of a mag I used to collect. You might be interested to know if it had not been for the war there would have been new 1941 Opel trucks, with styling similar to the 1941 N American trucks. Post-war Opel produced AD style trucks as well. Must dig out a copy of a pic of one.

As rediculously PC as everything is becoming how long will it be before you won't be able to use the word "Apache" when you describe your truck, without apologies to any Native Americans that might be tuned in? As for the AD trucks wouldn't it be PC to call all those built before 47' as BC?

Good point........... There are many native tribes here in Arizona. One of them is the " Apache " tribe. This tribe is known for being furious warriors. The most famous of all Apaches was " Geronimo " http://curtis-collection.com/tribe%20data/apache.html http://odur.let.rug.nl/~usa/B/geronimo/geronixx.htm Given todays modern traffic problems, I would be proud to fly the " Apache" emblem on one of my old trucks. Just call me the road warrior.

The reason that the “Apache” Series identification was dropped after 1962 was the other Native American tribes did not all necessarily "love" the Apaches and didn’t want that name on their trucks.

Now what are you going to do about the "Ute"? Not the football team or the tribe but the truck. P.S. the football team so named beat the team named after cows (longhorns).
