We had our local chapter ATHS (American Truck Historical Society)Antique Truck Show today ,and I saw ,for the first time in person, one of those RARE Slide-in Pickup Beds. A vendor selling mostly sheetmetal parts had it for sale. Anyone else ever seen one. It was neat, had me wanting to buy it, then go look for a late 30's to early 40's Chevy coupe to slide it into.

Hi SPANKY,

Is this the type slide-in box you saw? What was the asking price and condition?

AntiqueMechanic, That's exactly what I saw today. He was asking $1800 for it, which I thought was high, seeing it was kind of bent out of shape somewhat. Kind of like it had been carelessly moved around alot. But it was fixable. How is that price. High or Low. He stated he bought it to resale, so I'm guessing it can be bought cheaper. He's from here in N.C., I've bought from him before. I think he told me he bought it out west.

I would assume that the quoted price included installation and painting.

The slide in boxes was available as early as 1928. I am looking for one for my 1928 Roadster. The latest I am aware of was 1941. I have run across several boxes installed in several model years from 1928 to 1941.

The 1938, shown above, is complete to include the extremely rare two-handled door for the spare tire compartment.

The trick is to find everything necessary to make the installation complete and correct.

Hey Ray, I'd like to see the other two trucks in the background... do you have more photos? Or if you wouldn't mind and it's not a private collection, send me the location by private E-mail. I'd like to put it on my list of places to visit. dance :cool2:

The picture was taken inside a huge private collection of prime Chevrolets. It is not open to the public except on special occasions. If you knew him, and were in his vicinity, he would allow you to drool over his Chevrolet iron. The collection is very heavy in 4-cylinder cars and also includes a Model D V-8.

OK, thanks for the picture... I've heard of the early V-8's, but have never seen anything but photos.

All I can say is "wow"!

I showed the picture to my wife without comment...she says, with a smile: "what's that, someone's garage?"..(I just stare at the photo, still silent)...she says: "you're kidding..." (I continue to stare, my nose now pressed really close to the display to see the details better)...she leaves the room...

I don't think she gets it... laugh

antiquemechanic, thanks for all the photos...really fun stuff...

ok epi
