Damn, its slow around here !!! What can we do to get discussions started about correct truck restorations around here ???? I dont claim to be an expert on anything {except beer & cigars} but, I have been messin' with AD '47- 55 1st trucks for 25 years now & I have a 25 year collection of parts & accessories to match my experience . Anyone got anything to say ' bout these trucks ???

I have a question, I got one of the 'traffic light viewers' for Christmas and the directions tell me to use one of the screws at the base of the windshield to attach the viewer. My '55 (2nd series) doesn't have any screws only has the rubber moulding at the botttom of the wind shield. With the outside sunshield above my front window I could really use the viewer. So how do I attach the viewer??????

Well Gator, I guess you will just have to send the sunvisor and viewer to me for my 57 truck, It has screws in the garnish molding!

You can use of of the Fulton viewers that have a suction cup & you can attach it anywhere on the glass.

Gator,I have the instructions for installing te traffic light viewer in a '57 truck and would assume the the '55 would be the same as nothing changed.First of all the passenger car instructions require drilling a hole in the dash as does the truck. On the car the hole is 9 1/2" inches to the left of the center of the dash and 1 1/4" back from the windshield garnish moulding. The truck picture says to drill the hole directly above knob location but doesn't say what knob and drawing isn't that clear. Also doesn't say how far from windshield but picture indicates mid way between windshield and edge of the dash. It will be mounted to the right of the speedometer hump on the dash..I will be checking some pictures to see if I can determine what knob they are refering to.

The part number for the viewer is 987273.It is the same from 1955-57.It has a stud (with nut) that fastens it to the dash. The type I have on my '50 has a sheet metal screw thread and replaces a garnish moulding screw. The instructions say to drill a 1/4 " hole in the dash (ouch) The knob refered to in the truck instructions is the wiper knob.So it should be above the wiper knob (on the top of the dash) midway between the front and rear edge of the dash. The car and truck viewers are the same.

Thanks for the input, am I correct in thinking that for the '55 (2nd series) I have to drill a hole in my dash? Ouch! is right, tell me more about the suction cup method.

I also rebel from drilling a hole in the dash...but when I was younger and these AD trucks were new I remember drilling holes to mount many things, even cutting holes in the floor to mount a PTO shift lever and a dump bed valve lever, without any reservations ...Boy! have things changed!.....Now I have been welding in floor pieces to cover these holes and going thru all kinds of contorsions to route wires, and operating cables so that they aren't visable. I even use mini C clamps to mount my CB so that it doesn't call for drilling holes.

Chevy nuttt, I am showing part # 929441 for the De luxe Guide viewer [ the thick one ] & 929455 for the " sea shell " type Guide viewer [ this publication is dated 8-29-52 ] though . My new book shows you are correct on your part # for the 55-56 car & truck viewer. Is this viewer the " sea shell " type or the thick " De Luxe " type ?? Anyway ya cut [ or drill it ] , it hurts to drill that hole in the dash. If you are sqeemish about drilling the hole, the Fulton viewer [ # 34 ] with the window suction cup mount is your best bet. as the box says....... " Keeps The Light Within Your Site ".

mothertrucker,These are the viewer numbers I have from my parts books...986550 for 1950-54,987273 for 1955-57 and 987449 for 1958.These are only Chevrolet numbers that I find.Never heard mention of deLuxe etc. and all pictures that I have show the shell type. The numbers you have,929441 and 929455 don't jive with Chevrolet accessory numbers as they always began with 986-987 or 988.Where did you find them??

The same viewers were used on all GM products, so #'s will be different. Only 2 were used. I will scan a picture of the original " guide " traffic light literature & post it on my Webshotz link. Let me know what ya think.

After re-reviewing pictures the shell type shown in the "57 accy. installation manual has the lower hevay lines going straight across rather than curving as on Guides. Also thinking way back ( which some times takes a while) The "thick" type was used on some of the first GM cars if I recall corectly.will be watching for more info.

It is the 'shell' type, I am going to try and 'juryrig' something so I don't have to drill a hole. If I come up with something I will let you know. Home depot maybe can inspire something that will work.
Any ideas will be welcome.
Is there a "putty like" or sticky (non-damaging) type of material out there?

don't know if it would be sticky enough, as I'm not sure how heavy your viewer is and how much torque it would apply when you hit a bump, but out here in earthquake country, museums & galleries all use a kind of putty that sticks the display item to the shelf...non-acid or staining, because of what it is used for...look online to art supply, china & crystal, or earthquake preparedness...make sure it's non-staining, so as not to damage your dashboard... hope this helps... epi
