I HAVE A 1995 1/2 TON TRUCK. THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SEEMS TO BE LEAKING OIL. IT LEAKS FROM WHERE THE DRIVE SHAFT ENTERS THE DIFFERENTIAL. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

Thats a little new but what you need to have replaced is the pinion seal.This will come under a "don't try this at home" as if not properly done the pinion bearing load can be affected and thats bad. devil

What Chev nut says is right. I stuffed the first 1 I done by over tightening and have seen similar damage by not tight enough.

Mark the nut and pinion shaft with a small chisel. Back off the very tight nut counting the revolutions the nut makes. 3/4 inch drive sockets with a long pipe on the breaker handle may be needed. After replacing the seal do the reverse until the marks line up.Done quite a few this way and never had a problem with the preload.If you are not completely confident about doing it, take it to a good shop.
