The late 47-55 1st doesn't usually have any hood ornaments! There are either numbers or emblems on the hood sides but any chrome "ornament" on the front center seam is a rare dealer option or aftermarket item. I have seen a few different styles on ebay, and on junkyard trucks. Some are smooth and fit the contour of the nose seam; others are more jet-like. Is this "optional" chrome center front 'ornament' what you are refering too?

Or do you mean the "Chevrolet Emblem" in the very front?

The 47-53 accessory hood ornament was the flat type. The 1954,1st design '55 is the 1953 accy. eagle with a smaller base.

There is a nice article "Hood Emblems and Ornaments
1947-57" on the Jim Carter Tech area - http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/cgi-bin/htmlos.cgi/00431.1.878619732017254356

Yes they really had hood ornaments. They were dealer installed accessorys. Not often seen, as trucks were trucks in those days. The 1947 to 1953 used the same ornament and the 1954 & 1st series 1955 used the same ornament. The 1st series 1955 looks like a 1954 with the big center tooth grill. The only major difference is that the grill was painted white (if not chrome) and the 1/2 tons had an open drive shaft.

Chevy did offer hood ornaments as an option on all trucks from 47-55 1st. The 47-53 ornament was called the " cow tongue " [ GM part # 986161 ] & the 54 55 1st ornament was called the " eagle " [GM part # 986982 ]. Both of these ornaments are currently being reproduced but nothing beats an NOS part in the GM box.
