The reprinted 47-54 Factory Assembly Manual (reprinted from a 54 original) has a shock absorber color code instruction sheet. The color listed for the front shocks on the 3600 series (and for front and rear on the 3100s) is "PLAIN" . Got two questions. First, does anyone know what color plain actually is? Second, would the colors be the same for earlier years (in particular, my 1953)? Thanks in Advance (Design) :)

All shocks were black in the 50s so they must mean plain black

Chevgene,
I think you're probably right on plain meaning "plain black". What got me wondering was that the table lists green as the color of the rear shocks on the 3600 and 3742, blue as the color of the front shocks on the 4000 & 6000 trucks, and white as the color of the front shocks on the 5000 trucks. All other shocks are listed as plain.

I am going just by memory but I would swear all trucks had black shocks. They were so visable on trucks so this makes me think they were black. The color may even been an identifacation tag or sticker on the shock used on the assembly line so they were installed on the proper trucks.

Good point, I hadn't considered that, but it does make sense. I think I'll just paint all four shocks black and leave it at that. Thanks for your input.
