Guys I have a 32 special sedan 6. My question is what exactly does the electolock do? Reason for asking is I turn the key switch and step on the starter button and it starts. I have not been too observant as the originality of the switch. There is about 6" of metal shielding left behind the switch, then I see wires that go through the firewall. I assume from previous post that the shielding goes to the distributor. I have heard that when you turn the key some thing pops out around the key. Mine does not. The car starts fine, but I would like to get it original.

Thanks

Steve

You may have a replacement switch. The original has a wire wound armoring of about 3/4" that extends from the lock cylinder to the distributor. Maybe someone has a photo that they can post. If not I might be able to take one in the next couple of days.

The original Delco-Remy electrolock was an armored cable that had the key switch as part of the unit. The electrolock attached to the distributor body via a terminal cup, a terminal stud and various other parts and insulators. The lock cylinder "popped" out when the key was turned to the right thus activating the ignition system.

Does anyone have a picture of what I need to look for? There is a junk yard close to me that has a lot of 29's, 30's, 31's and 33's, but no 32's. Will any of these work on my 32? If not please advise where I might locate one.

Thanks Guys

1930 thru 1932 are interchangeable without doing any rewiring.

Steve,

Let me know if you see an electrolock for a '29.

The 1929 electrolock has only one terminal stud on the side of the lock case. And, the lock cylinder is all pot metal without a nickel plated ring pressed on around the circumference of the lock cylinder at the front like the 1930-32 lock cylinders. laugh laugh laugh

Thanks Ray and everyone who has a spare electrolock and offered them. I actually have one too, that needs restoring. Rather find one with the keys, but maybe JYD can help me with my old one.

Thanks again,
Jim

Steve,
I sent you an email and picture.
There is no ring on the one I have, just the big flat nut that tightens to the back of the dash.
It does have only one screw on it and I think it's for a '29

There is no "big flat nut" that attaches on the electrolock on the back of the instrument panel. The correct "nut" is actually a large, round nickel plated threaded bezel that is threaded onto the electrolock case on the front of the instrument panel. There is also a large, thin flat nickel plated washer with a notch that goes between the threaded bezel and the front of the instrument panel.

Arvid,
Thanks for the photo of a '29 electrolock. Maybe it will help a few understand what was originally installed.

The 1930-32 electrolock looks like the 1929 electrolock featured in the photo above, except that the 1930-32 electrolock has three threaded terminals on the side of the case instead of one as shown on the 1929 electrolock.

Yep that's just like the one I have, only it has a big flat nut where the bezel is supposed to be.

The nickel plated bezel and flat washer featured in the photo above is correct for all electrolocks from 1929 through 1932.
