Actually . Gene,....With the guy Adminsterating this site very little modulation is needed, this is a well oiled, finely tuned. and smoooouth running car hobby outfit!

We get paid about what we are worth, With an annual raise of 5.25%, besides they take care of paying our Health Insurance as needed.

Gene:

Are you 'suggesting' something "in-between the lines??"

Or, are you just wondering where "they" are??

Just curious......

Maybe so, Do you think they may be in it just for the money? Just kidding!
There really isn't much a Moderator has to do, what would you suggest a moderator should do? Delete posts they disagree with or maybe find foolish or cruel, or whatever? Or maybe delete every thread over 60 days old? Do you think ANY of them even know what is going on here? Maybe we should elect moderators like we elect National Directors, WITHOUT allowing them to put any campaign action or oratory or even ask for your vote? This is a good time to let VCCA members here that care about the site to have their say! I guess I will just DUCK and wait for some relief!

I think moderators should monitor the threads and take action only as a last resort. Bill Barker sets a very fine example!!!! And when he does end a thread, he doesn't make any members feel like jerks, albeit sometimes they are.

I think a moderator should be helpful in his forum, as he should know something about the thread subject before becoming a moderator. He should help keep the topic on track as transparently as possible.

And above all, the moderator should set an example by using correct English and correct spelling. :)

BigBob, You are right on, That is the way Billy Boy BaRRker wants moderators to operate, and I heartily agree, now if I could always get that curse spell checker to understand me!

As to the correct English, maybe we should just appoint English Professors maskeraiding as mechanics as Moderators! I don't know of many mechanics or even some college edcuated engineers that are able to maskeraid as a college English professor.

Come on you stupid spell checker I KNOW I spelled maskeraid correctly!

I would think it's what a moderator prevents as opposed to what he does.
curse spell checker could become..******, ****,
******* spell checker. Without a moderator. (only an example MM)
Also some topics could become quite heated.
If a moderator is payed then he should at least earn his money.

Once a week at least.

If, that is IF, the moderators are not doing a "good job," I'd say it's BEST to be too "lenient" rather than be too "quick" to act.

However, there is NO doubt - at least in my mind - that some of these threads do "drift" way too far off track.

The moderators have a tough job. Hard to "win." Sort of like a referee in a basketball / football etc. game.

I'd be more likely to cut-off an individual; rather than the entire subject or thread.

I do agree that Bill Barker has a very nice "way" of saying "stop you idiots, you've gone too far." He always seem to handle the sitch very nicely.

Bill.

I'm sorry 42Bill I disagree, surely "drifting" is the way of human conversation.
If the site was over policed by moderators wielding the axe, there very soon would not be a site to moderate.
The techno questions get answered to a very high standard & we all have a bit of fun.
Bill's moderate moderation is spot on. ok

No, Moderators are not paid a red cent, but it is nice for morale to know you are going to get a 5% raise or maybe even 20% each year!!!

Ok JYD I am ready this time!

P.S. Billy BaRRker probably would replace a Moderator if he felt it was necessary, as I have said, this is a group of very astute folks enjoying their hobby,

A Moderator is kinda like a spare tire, we ride under the bed and collect any mud and crapola thrown our way, and hardly ever get our air pressure checked!, then There is hell is to pay when one of the rollers go flat, and we are out of air!

This has been a classic example...A topic starts off on a "serious" subject and goes down the drain. This has turned off many people and they no longer frequent this site because of it.

Sorry-but thats the truth :(

I'm sorry Chev Nut I expect I'm often the guilty one there although I don't fully agree with you'
As members of the site as far as I see it, we have no control to remove moderators only to give our views which we have.
I think this topic has had a proper airing along with a bit of jossing.
I'm not sure about loosing members for the reasons you state but then I don't have an American view on life.
I joined this site because of the fun factor in the posts, the serious business was looked after & questions answered but with a good deal of humour thrown in.
As usual I've added my penny worth!

Chevynut has a valid point about moderators, perhaps we are overloaded with them, some probably think it is a higher status to have Moderator stuck on their moniker, kinda like havin a jillion posts or having a lower VCCA number than me, that is just human nature, and an ego thing, which ,I am sure is not one of Gene's problems, ego ,that is.

Term limits?

How about someone asking them once a year on Jan 1st if they want to continue with the job or give it to someone else?

Now that's a pretty darn good idea......

I take it 'moderators' are like Supreme Court Justices...... appointed for "life??"

It doesn't seem like it'd take too long to send the "current" moderators a "form letter" type of email once a year.

MAYBE some of the moderators don't want to be moderators any longer but are sorta "embarrassed" to say they'd like to quit/resign/retire/whatever.

Gator's "idea" would take of that possibility also.

Bill.
