On ebaby there is a guy "selling" a '67 vette, (#2463158037) you have to get 'pre-approved' to bid. When you email him he emails back telling you that you need to send him $2,000 as a deposit in order to be considered for the car.
Now the 'hook' he tells you he only wants $9,900 for this 1967 corvette w/427, all original matching numbers and less than 22,000 miles and in PERFECT condition. Pictures show a mint 427 vette. Car is in Portugal and he will pay all shipping and taxes, etc out of the $9,900. What a joke, I don't know how to alert ebay about this, if any of you do please tell them about this rip-off.
Here is his email to me:
-------------------------------------------------- Hello there, Thank you for your interest in purchasing my item .
First of all I must inform you that currently I'm in Portugal and the machine is here with me .My fater, who died two weeks ago was the first owner of the item; He bought it directly from a local dealership in Ohio.
The machine is in perfect condition ,only 21900 miles on it,no damage,no scratches or dents, never touched the ground, no hidden defects, keept in my own garage. The machine is an US model with US specs,it passed the test emissions and comes with all the documents you need to register the item.
It has a clear title and it can be registerd into your name,so stay cool about this. I recently ordered a new car from a dealer down here and i need the cash in the next few days to pay for it.
The price I hope to obtain is $9,900 USD (this price includes the shipping and insurance) and if you agree with this price we can start to complete the transaction. I have to tell you that I have other serious offers that I have to consider and I will make a decision regarding this sale function of time of payment and price.
i will shipp the car using KLM 5-7 air days delivery. We can make this COD, but if you want to keep the car for you, then ou have to a down a deposit with 2,000 USD. So email me back if you ae intersted and you have the cash.
The car will be shipped from Portugal and i will cover the shipping costs and insurance. You will not have to pay additional taxes, just only the price for it.
Let me know!
------------------------------------------------
PS here is the current NADA prices for a '67, 427 (L88) vette:
Total Price: low retail = $750,225, average retail = $999,750, high retail = $1,250,400.

Gator, he took his cue from the e-mail spammaster King Obouwuiee from Senegal (or insert African nation here) who's looking to share part of his inheritance if you merely provide your bank account number.

Last year I had a couple of AMX's for sale on "Car on Line".com. I sold them both but more than one I was emailed from Nigeria telling me they would pay more than I was asking. They would send a cashiers check for the whole thing & I was to wait till the bank cleared their check and send them a cashiers check for the difference. The cashiers checks from Nigeria were of course bogus(actually counterfeit) but the banks in the U.S would apparently say they were OK. Then you send a legitimate check to Nigeria and get a call from your bank saying,"Guess what? The Nigerian check was no good and you're out the money you just sent!

E-bay has a fraud protection that can be notified about this kind of stuff. Some of the scams I've read about are unreal. One of the latwst is someone copying pictures off a web site and trying to sell the item. Another thing. Any e-mail you may receive regarding updating, confirming, verifying your e-bay i.d. should be immediately deleted. As long as you can list or bid on a item you don't need to verify anything to anyone.

Hi rod, If you receive such a message, it would assist all of us if you would copy the "properties" of the message, add it to the message, and then forward it to spoof@ebay.com

The eBay fraud protection is a joke. I have been there and done that, as well as many of my friends....and all with zero results. Ebay actually protects, to a certain extent, the guilty party, and there are sellers on eBay with hundreds of negatives and they are still selling their items and ripping people off. I know of one fellow who even stole another seller's eBay identity to list and sell items that didn't exist. He too was turned into the eBay fraud protection program........and he is still selling on eBay! And, the fellow's ID that was stolen? Well, eBay tried to make him pay for all of the listing fees and their commission, which amounted to several thousand dollars!  :( :( :(

All of that may in fact be true, however if we do not report violations, we can be assured that no action will be taken.

Same guy was selling a 409 '63 Chevy two weeks ago. Ebay yanked the ad - he reappeared with under a new Ebay ID! Someone is going to get burned - shame, but you know the old cliche.... If its too good to be true - it most likely is!

When I had a problem with a theif on ebay I went to the bidders list and gave them a "heads up" about my experience with the seller(. Making sure I only told them what happened to me, just my facts so I couldn't get into trouble with the thief yelling 'libel' (of course I never used the word 'thief' in the 'heads up'message).
And it helped the winning bidder, he required the item to be sent COD, so the thief had to send the item.

P.S. I have sent several emails to spoof@ebay.com and you need to be careful and NOT open any attachments, just send the whole thing to them, it's almost all we can do, can't hurt...

Assuming you have received one of the famous messages that offers you a fee to assist with a problem, or a message that is obviously bogus, here is the way to handle it. 1. Right click on the subject line. 2. Go to “properties”. 3. In the new window click “details” at the top. 4. Select (highlight) everything in the box. 5. Then copy (control-C) 6. Click OK. 7. Click “forward” 8. In the address line enter either spoof@ebay.com (if an eBay problem) or Abuse@ (fill in the blank for any other server). 9. Click in the message body above the ----Original Message----- 10. Right click at that location and select ”˜paste’. 11. Click send. Don’t mean to be conducting a class on computer operation, but just wanted to clarify an earlier post.

Actually it is easier than that. Just forward the message to spoof@ebay.com. I have done it several times and always get a response thanking for the info.

Chip, That is the point that I was trying to make. If you do not send the HEADER information all you accomplish is to receive an automated response and no action. To take any action they MUST have the header.

I've sent dozens of these to spoof@ebay.com and I don't seem to get as many as I used to. oldgas.com has a section where people warn of scams and repro items that are on e-bay. There seem to be some results when a lot of people "ask the seller a question" and warn that person of the fraudulent auction they have. Of course they try and get out of any fraud in their fine print, or can change their e-bay i.d. real quick. It has gotten to be a real mess, and everyone needs to be cautious. If it sounds too good to be true- it probably is.

Gator.... I know that a certain thief you are talking about...I think you warned me about him....and I required that he send me the stuff COD and he never did. I am still waiting. I have called, left messages, even talked to the guy.
Although, I haven't seen his by line on the ebay lately, I heard he was going under another name.

He is not making his daddy proud.
Sorry about your 'stuff', but this guy just buys and re-sells so you should be able to find the 'stuff' somewhere else and cheaper too.
Try the "parts wanted" section here and ask about the stuff you need. If these guys don't have it they know where you can get it.
Good Luck...
