How much slop is ok for the bushes in the cross shafts on a 28? How would you get it apart? Drill the the rivets and grind off the arms?

Hi Ozmax Yesterday I toook apart the cross shaft on my new -28 prosjekt. Grind of the rivits with a angle grinder. Inside the are a ring of potmetal. On my -29, I made a splitt ring of bronze( two half mooon) and fit they over the shaft, and I will do the same on this -28 shaft. It works perfekt on my -29. No clattering or rumble. ![[Linked Image from img201.imageshack.us]](http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/7583/crossshaft005hj3.jpg) And here are some pictures from my -29 brakes and cross shaft. https://vccachat.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=001779#000007 Regards Arvid http://www.chevroletnorge.com

Thanks Arvid I was thinking of a split bush out of brass or nylon. The isue for me is do I need to do it? how much slop is ok? and what happens when you have slop? is it just the noise or will it effect the way the brakes work. Thanks for your help Max

Hi Max, About ten years ago I had my crosshafts rebushed by Peter Jacksons in Sydney (now Spectrum Rubber). The bushes were made of of nylon material and are fine after about 15000 miles. At the time I gave them the cross shafts as a unit and it cost me $100. Before I had them done the brakes worked fine. It was the noise that got to me. Somewhere along the line someone had installed a strap of spring steel to hold the rods apart but it did not do a very good job. I know of other people who have made their own but they happen to have a lathe. They always use some nylon type material. Terry

I am agreed with you Terry. The brakes will work ok with some slop in the buchings. The are the noise from the chassis when you drive on the road, we don't like. I have not tried nylon, but I think it's a good idea. :) Arvid http://www.chevroletnorge.com

I have the opposite problem , the cross shaft seizes up when the car sits for a while, I have to use a pipe wrench to get them to rotate, also while using copious amounts of PB Blaster, I think that the babbit or pot metal is broken up or worn so badly that dirt and moisture get in and corrosion locks up the works. It has been this way ever since we bought the car in '01
