I have a '28 LO truck and I am looking for help in making sure that it is timed correctly.
Is there a way to do this with a timing light... When i try to follow the instructions in the manual it just seems to run a little hot and it is a little sluggish on power.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have the manual spark advance control hooked up? sounds like you are running the spark in full retard. Retard is for starting, full advance is for running.

There appear to be a lot of after market timing gears that have the top dead centre (TDC) stamped in the wrong place. The ony true way to check is get your no.1 piston on TDC and work from there. LO trucks should run the automatic dissy Chris

I have a 28 Capitol Truck and here is how it went... As stated by our comrads above, set No.1 piston to TDC. Insert distributer gear to mesh with the cam gear such that the points are about to open (the moment of open creates the spark). It is pretty easy to find the sweet spot because the retard/advance range gets you in the ballbark. Next, fine tune with the timing light and the marker on the flywheel. I have never tries to set dwell but have used my ear.. :-)
I rebuilt a water pump today. Having a press for the bushings really makes a difference. It was a good day at the Closson's. Maxie

Maxie, just one more detail. Just having the #1 piston on TDC isn't enough, since the flywheel turns two revolutions for one of the distributor. You must also have the #1 piston at TDC and both the intake and exhaust valves on #1 cylinder closed.

Maxie, Here is a page that I've posted which tries to summarize a bunch of information about how to time your early Chev engine. Admittedly it is targeted at the early 6 cylinder engines, but the theory described on the pages is still valid. You may find this of some help. CLICK HERE for Early Chev Engine Timing Information <Naturally a big thanks to all of the VCCA'ers who assisted in sharing their knowledge, and to the JYD who proof read my pages more times than I did!!>
