G'day all, I am stripping a '27 gearbox and I don't have a clue how to remove the input shaft any instructions/suggestion would be handy? Also '29 was the first year with syncros was it not? I should be able to use the '29 gears in the '27 housing as they are the same housing? Cheers Jimmy

Jimmy B, Just remove the four bolts that retain the clutch/input shaft assembly bearing retaing plate on the front of the gearbox, and with the top cover off, using a brass dolly, gently tap the shaft from the inside to the front of the gearbox. It only has to move the width of the bearing, and will come straight out. 1932 was the first year of synchros fitted. Not too sure if the '29 gears will fit in the '27 gearcase.Perhaps someone else with more knowledge will be able to help you out on that question.

The gears from the 29 will work in the 27 with no improvement, unless you have bad gears in the 27. (Already we are missing the advice on transmissions that was previously provided by Herb Jackson. He will be missed).

For replacing individual parts only, the following 1929 3-speed transmission parts are the same as 1927: Case, countershaft low speed gear, reverse idler cluster gear, countershaft and the case cover. The following 1929 3-speed transmission parts are not the same as 1927: Intermediate countershaft gear, first-reverse sliding gear, second-third sliding gear, main drive gear, and the spline shaft.

Junkyard dog has explained what a lot of people don't know, a couple of the 29 gears look exactly the same as the Chev 4 gears but arn't so you have to be very careful if you try and mix them, better to not mix them unless you are desperate Chris
