We thought we had a broken axle on our '28 National but all the gears are fine. Is there a pin in the drive shaft that might be broken, or anything else anyone can think of? Thx.

Actually, we need more information. From what you have said I assume the vehicle won't move under it's own power. Could be broken axle, broken driveshaft, stripped spline gears, stripped key or keyway, ect.

What do you mean by: (all the gears are fine)?

Jack up one rear wheel. Place car in gear. Turn the wheel that was jacked up. If you can turn it you have a problem. If you can't turn it, then what is the problem?

Question: I have both rear wheels free, when I turn one say clockwise the other one turns counter clockwise, that's correct? I assume the transmission is in neutral as the turning goes nice and smooth. The shift lever is frozen/not movable in that position, but that's a whole new project.
Thanks for your time and sorry for busting in here, but while we're at it, I might as well.

Richard

OK one thing less to worry about, still wondering why they parked it in that pile of junk.
Thanks :)

OK - I am assuming that my husband has done the jack it up stuff you said. He says the problem appears to be somewhere between the rear end and the transmission. He's just wondering (before he starts tearing into it) if there was any common problem that he should look at first that would save him hours of looking. Thanks!

If your husband performed the checks I suggested, it is time to disassemble the U-joint and see what is broken. Could be drive shaft, stripped splines, ect.

Most Chev 4's break tailshafts, usually at the rear, on the tapered end around the keyway. You need to take the tailshaft and pinion from the ring gear to see the break
