Apparently there is a "locking mechanism" in order for the gear shift lever to come out of the housing via the removal of the "collar". Under the "collar" is where I guess the lock is located. What kind of lock? Didn't want to bang on it to see if it would come off. The Master parts catalog lists "#590044" as the lock part. I did a search on the VCCA chat site and found no mention of a lock. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The semi-dome collar is "J" locked onto the top gear shifting cover. The manual shows a tool used to push down and turn CCW to un "J" the collar and allow the collar and shifting lever to be removed. The tool has a notch to go around the shifting lever and allows you to put pressure down and turn the collar. I think a tool could be made from a 2x4 and cut the notch out with a jig saw, then chisel out a depression to fit the top of the collar. You could also put the transmission in neutral and remove the entire top cover, and then cover the opening with cardboard.

Mr. Mack,
That did it. It was a split ring lock key and I was able to press down on the housing to release it. Thanks!!!!!

If you need the cone shaped pot metal cover, it is available. They normally disintegrate when you attempt to remove them.

Ray, My original cone shaped pot metal cover did disintergrate; however, the one I found is not pot metal. I would be interested in purchasing a pot metal cover.

The cover being reproduced is made from aluminum. Very difficult to tell from the original.
