Help
It's a beautiful day here in Oregon City. I decided to take the '28 to the charity show at the grade school. Connected the battery and turned on the fuel and it started right up. Problem is the amp gauge is reading backwards. I polarized the generator no change. I came in and checked the Web Board to make sure I did it correct. Tried again. No change. Any ideas? I need to leave in 15 minutes. I could probably make it there and back (it's a short ways) but I'd rather have it working properly.
Thanks
Mike

Did you accidentally put the battery in backwards?

You should have a model 943-B three brush generator. Check to see if the points are closing on the cut-out when you increase the engine speed. If the points are closing and the generator increases voltage when the points close (you can determine this with a volt meter) then the wire could be reversed on the back of the amp meter. If the amp gauge is reading a slight discharge at idle and then more of a discharge when you rev. up the engine, then that is a good indication that the wire is reversed on the back of the amp meter, therefore, the meter is reading in the wrong direction.

If, on the other hand, your generator is not putting out voltage then your generator has a problem. Sometimes when a car sits for awhile the generator will not charge due to a slight film on the commutator. If you have a brush stone you can clean the comm. to see if the generator will charge. If that doesn't work then a generator tear down is probably in order to determine the problem.

If the AMP meter is showing a discharge all the time then you need to do as JYD suggests, if it shows that it is charging when you turn on the ignition before you start the car, your have the wires on the AMP meter backwards.

Everything worked just fine the last time I drove it. I use a battery disconnect on the negative terminal on the battery and a maintainer when its disconnected. The gauge shows a discharge when it starts and goes farther negative with added RPMS. Just the opposite of what it should do. If I put a voltmeter on the wire coming out of the generator it goes negative. If I put the negative lead of the meter on that wire it reads volts.
Is it time for a rebuild?

I think that if you haven't changed out the stuff under the dash (amp meter etc,) you have somehow reversed the polarity , maybe of the battery, or maybe charged it backwards????
