My be the holes are for tail light? But if so,the are 3 holes. One 20mm in the center and two 1/4 "
above and below ? The 20 mm hole on the corner were the rims are fasten, are for the tyre valve.

Thanks Arvid
I can see the holes in the photo you have posted which conferms they are ment to be there.
You say the large one is for the valve to poke through. Whats the small one for?
I have been told that there is a separate switch for the tail light on the back of the car could it be for that? How is the spare acualy fatened to the carrier?

Thanks again
Max

G'day Max.
The first pictures is from my -29, and the second is for a -27 car. I don't know exaktly how the -28 are. The -28 rim are a little wider. Separate switch for tail light on the carrier? I have not seen or hear about it.

Ozmax the switch that you were refering to was a war time thing it was fitted so that you could turn off your tail lights when driving home at night so that enemy aircraft would not see you ,or something like that . I have not seen it fitted to the tyre carrier ,most were on the rear member near the fuel gauge.

The spare tyre clamp in the bottom picture is 1927 and is upside down. The hole in the clamp should line up with the hole in the carrier so that you can put a palock in it to stop it being stolen.
The clamp in the above picture is 1928

The tail light switch on the back of the car was a NSW only rule that was recinded in 1955. It was there so that by switching it on at the rear, you knew it was working

Ozmax
It is fastened with a rim nut
