I need some help here as it relates to the wood frame of the '28 Cabriolet, the later '28 Sport Cabriolet, and the '28 Coupe. Specifically, can anyone provide a definitive parts interchange list re. the wood frame? I have a complete, really good set of original wood parts from a '28 Coupe. I have a not-so-good set of wood frame parts from what I think is a'28 Sport Cabriolet, and I have other miscelanneous wood frame parts from other ?? '28 Cabriolets. I am going around in circles trying to figure this out. Also, I need a original Roof Bow from a '28 Sport Cabriolet to use as a pattern. This is the steam-bent bow, not the Top Bow. I will gladly return it,at my expense, after using it as a pattern. This would help me, and my customer, a lot. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill/KC Wood

Bill,

I recently completed the total wood replacement for a 1928 Sport Cabriolet Convertible, including the convertible top wood. I'm unsure from your request just what it is you are looking for. To me, the 1928 Sport Cabriolet was a fixed roof vehicle having coupe style doors (full window frame), while the Sport Cabriolet Convertible had a top that could be lowered and the door glass' were not supported across the top or rear vertical edges (door frame eliminated). If it is the Convertible wood you are seeking, I can help.

Hi Dick,

It is the 1928 Sport Cabriolet Convertible wood that Bill is looking for. Especially the wood that is in the convertible top.

Could you please post a picture of your finished product or email it to me?

Hello Oldie,
I guess you could tell by my request for help that I did not have an understanding of the difference in these three body styles. After reading your reply I reviewed "75 Years of Chevrolet" on this issue and I think it is finally beginning to soak in.So, the Coupe and the Sports Cabriolet were basically the same car, with the exception of the rumble seat in the Sports Cabriolet instead of a trunk as in the Coupe. The Convertible Sports Cabriolet, then, is the only one of the three with a true convertible roof. What threw me off base here is Chevrolet's use of the term Cabriolet for the non-convertible Sport Cabriolet. My understanding of a Cabriolet body ( supported by several reference books covering vehicles going all the way back to draft vehicles ) is that a Cabriolet is by definition a vehicle with a folding top.I guess Chevrolet was stretching the definition a bit.Anyway, the pattern I need is for the Roof Bow from a convertible-top Cabriolet. I have a pretty good pattern for the Top Bow but nothing for the Roof Bow. Am I right in thinking that the Roof Bow is a steam-bent part? When you rewooded your car did you bend your new Roof Bow?I am looking forward to hearing from you on this as you are helping to clear up something that has been puzzleing me for a long time. Thanks, Bill/KC Wood

Good Morning All,
Yesterday I received an e-mail with a diagram of the roof area of the '28 Cabriolets, along with a knowledgeable explanation of the differences in these vehicles.Thank you Sir! The main point that was made is that the '28 Coupe, Sports Cabriolet, and the Sports Cabriolet Convertible all have different roof frames. Also, the two Cabriolets do have some interchangeble parts, most notably the Roof Bow. I find it odd that Chevrolet came out with the Sports Cabriolet with its fake convertible roof, to be followed by the true convertible Cabriolet. I wonder why they did this?
Dick, I think that the only part that I need a pattern for is the Roof Bow. If there is any way that I could borrow yours that would be great. Please e-mail me if this is a possibility and we can work out arrangements. Thanks, Bill/KC Wood

Bill,

Please Email me at RLOldenbur@aol.com and we'll make some kind of arrangements to accommodate your request. We need to pull this off this week as I'll be out of town for two weeks starting next week.

Dick, I really enjoyed talking to you today. Your friendliness and enthusiasm for the restoration of old Chevys is really appreciated. Above all though, thank you for your generosity in donating the '28 Convertible Sports Cabriolet parts to us that we needed for patterns. I hope that I can return the favor someday. I can assure you that we will put your parts to good use! Thank you, Bill/KC Wood
