My front brakes squeel when I step on them hard, and the stopping power is not so good. Is this just par for the course or am I doing something wrong. I have had the brakes relined, and the hubs seem smooth.

Squealing is not the best. It indicates vibration that is the on and off of the brake linings on the drums. When you push the pedal you want ON only. It is possible to get squeals from the correct soft woven linings but really tough. With the right linings and brakes properly adjusted they will slide all four wheels on dry pavement without excessive pedal pressure. The modern hard linings will hardly slide the wheels on gravel.

Amen, to that, also excessive friction and wear in the rods, clevises, peddle shafts,cross shafts and ill-adjusted brakes will lessen the desired pressure that is applied to the bands and shoes.

Braking is never a strength of a Chev 4 but it should stop firmly without an anxiety attack. With a modern compound you should use the softest available. Given limited mileage the wear factor is not important but if you don't stop you really will have limited mileage. Given that 1928 was the first year for four wheel brakes there was a tendency to rely on a balance towards the rear. I would adjust the cross shaft to favour the front more. It's all a matter of going over all the components and of continually readjusting. It's also a good idea to find someone who has driven these vehicles a lot and will quickly tell you whether or not the brakes are acceptable.

Thanks for the information. As to the lining, I did have the woven material put on, but did not know there were multiple kinds. The squeeling seems to only come from the front. the emergency brake will lock the back wheels without a squeel, and it has the same lining material. I guess I'll have to take another look at the front brakes for adjustment, etc...
