in a 28 tranny? I'm mechanically inclined and many years ago could rebuild a standard transmission, but like I said, that was many years ago.
Can I attempt this myself or should I take it to a pro?
Suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks.

An easy job if you have the right tools.

Usually only one gear wears out and this is the smaller drive gear. It's easy to replace. Undo the speedo cable where it joins the box, then undo the fitting the speedo cable was attached to, then undo the large nut on the opposite end. With a pair of long nose pliers, you can pull the shaft out, rotating it as you do. The gear is a tight fit on the shaft, measure the length from the end, remove the gear and replace it with the new one in the same position. If you want to replace the larger drive gear you need to remove the uni joint. It's also a tight fit and comes off fairly easy Hope this helps Chris

Maxie, The trans. can stay in truck but you need to remove the U-joint off of the back of it.

Yes, Maxie, it can be done just like chevy b said. As it turns out it's not near as complicated as I thought it would be.

We are in luck! It turns out, after removing the speedometer cable, gear and shaft for inspection, all was in tact. The gear teeth good and receiver end for cable slotted appropriately. I found the speedometer cable end was frayed and the nub that lockes into the gruve of the cable gear shaft was broken off. I had th elocal spedometer shop make a replacement cable to insert into the old sheeth and we are good to read the whapping 35 mph this truck is comnfortable at...
It was a good day at the Closson's. I can now go the 2.8 miles on tour and turn right!!! :-)
