Hi all: I'm new to the game and haven't got a manual yet. My car is a National AB 2 door coupe which is restored as a fire chief's car. I am hooking up its siren and red light but am leery about electricity. What kind of fuses are used and where do they fit in the wiring scheme? Can I use in line fuses, and if so, are they different from 12 volt fuses? As part of the restoration, I am replacing the windlace around the radiator and cowl. Is there a good method to installing the split rivets? I am also curious about the valve cover gaskets. When I first got the machine, it ran with little loss of oil and this was without any gasket material. Now I've installed the two piece gasket and it looks like there may be more possibility for leakage. Haven't been on the road yet to check. Is there another part to the gasket I don't know about? Thanks for any help, Dale

Hi dale007, Will give your answers a shot. What kind of fuses are used and where do they fit in the wiring scheme? Can I use in line fuses, and if so, are they different from 12 volt fuses? As to the siren and red light. Where they are mounted, with the exception of on a wooden part of the car, is the ground. Run a wire from the "ON" side of the switch to the appliance through an in-line fuse. This fuse can be mounted anywhere in the circuit from the ignition to the appliance. For the light I suggest a 5-AMP fuse. As to the siren, use a 10 amp fuse to start. If the siren blows the 10 amp then change to a 14. I am replacing the windlace around the radiator and cowl. Is there a good method to installing the split rivets? I install the rivets from the outside into the inside. Use a large set of pliers and a small screwdriver to start the split. Place the shaft of the screwdriver in the slit and squeeze with the pliers. After the split has started I buck the head of the rivit and finish the split with a small hammer. When I first got the machine, it ran with little loss of oil and this was without any gasket material. Now I've installed the two piece gasket and it looks like there may be more possibility for leakage Basically the valve cover gasket on a 1928 is used to keep the small amount of oil in the two depressions from being blown out by the fan. So, insure the end of the valve cover toward the fan has a gasket across the end and the other portion of the "L" down the side of the head on the spark plug side.

Thanks Ray. Your answers will help me immensely. I still have a question as to whether there are 6 volt fuses and 12 volt ones. NAPA didn't have any listing for 6 volt fuses and suggested Radio Shack. Am I talking to the right people? Do I have to go to a specialty shop for 6 volt items? Thanks again, Dale

Fuses will work on both 6v and 12v.

Fuses are rated by AMPs and not voltage. A 10 AMP fuse will protect above 10 AMPs regardless of the voltage. Fuses should be available at any automotive parts store.
