Hello All. I have an old car that my Father and I always thought was a Mercer Raceabout, but after looking past the radiator emblem everything says Chevrolet. For all aesthetic reasons it looks like a Mercer, but has a Chevrolet 4 cylinder (G137?) engine and 3 speed box, 10 bolt banjo style diff, and rear drum external shoe brakes, 21 inch wooden wheels etc. All driveline items mate eachother correctly, and all mountings look original and untouched. I have a list full of part and casting numbers from most driveline components, but have been unable to find any chassis markings. I have a fist full of digital photographs, and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what this car may be!

The engine clue equates to Jun 13 1927. Don't know for sure, but assume that number came from the engine. The head will also be dated in the same format. Suggest you post that date also. If you will send me one or two pictures I will make a stab at what you have.

Hi Sphoenix

Great to see that there is some more guys from Australia getting onto this site. If you can email me some details or even some photos I can help you establish just what you have.
It would be great to find out a bit more about the history of the car and some of the modifications that have been done and what era they were carried out.
I am located just out of Sydney but could also put you in touch with others in South Australia if you let me know where in SA you live.

Drop me a line I would be glad to help.

Well, first off, it appears to be an assembled Racer, chassis looks like 1927 Chevrolet, engine is base 1927 Chevrolet and highly modified. Radiator shell probably came from some other vehicle and the remainder of the body appears to be hand made.

Headlights may be F O R D.

Too bad they put the steering wheel on the WRONG side.

Great looking speedster. Does the Cylinder head have one or two exhaust ports?

Why would someone use a 1927 engine with all the advantages that a 1928 can offer? Especially for a racer.

No starter used to reduce weight. Push start.

Appears to be a pressure fuel system with a hand pump located somewhere. No indication of a source of vacuum from the constructed dual intake manifold.

Here's a question? Why did they use a balance tube between the carbs when both carbs enter into a common manifold?

Great car, by the way! I am tempted to build something similar out of my pile of left over bits.
