How would could I tell if I have a
1. Late 1927 Chevy Capitol 1/2 Ton Truck
or a
2. Early 1928 Chevy Capitol 1/2 Ton Truck ?

Is ther anything on the cowl tag that definately tells this?

Post all the information from the cowl tag, engine pad number, and the date code from the block and the head and we will break it out for you.

Also include the information from the title.

Ray must have gotten something on his glasses. 21 LO is a 1928 assembled in the Janesville, WI plant. It is a 1 ton "Capital" as both '27 (LM) and '28 (LO) used that name. They only have rear brakes. The late '28 LP was also called "Capital". They have 4 wheel brakes. Not sure why they are not National models.

Chipper is correct. My finger got on the wrong line. Soooooooooooooo,

Capitol = 1927 (This was information provided by you from the data tag)
National = 1928
These designations were made by Chevrolet.
Janesville, WI
10238 = Late June for the LO truck and was almost the last LO assembled. July was the start of production for the LP at the Janesville plant. (Information based on figures provided by Chevrolet. The first truck assembled in June was 9845 and the last truck was 10474 in the LO series).
LO and LP were both 1 ton trucks as designated by the LO and LP.

Both the 1927-28 Chev 1 ton Trucks were called Capitol like Chip related in the USA because the 27 front sheet metal and radiator design was carried over from 27 to 28. This series LO is a 1928 Capitol LO series 1 ton truck built in July oof 1928. The 1928 LP Capitol 1 ton went into production in August 1928 with 4 speed gear boxes as standard and 4 wheel brakes. National was only used in the USA for the 1/2 ton truck model with the series being AB. kenk

Any validity to the 6 Lug/8 Lug theory?

I don't think Chevy used any 8 lug wheels until after WWII on 3/4 and 1 Ton models. 37-40 3/4 and 1 Ton used 6 hole wheels. 1-1/2 Tons used 10 hole wheels from 1934 on (maybe earlier).

1.Ken and I would be very interested to know more of the 1927 and 1928 finish car and utility express serial numbers for each plant! We have calculated the last 1928 LP series from the ledgers. I suspect that the digit is after the '45'..by the way the 'T' is a left hand drive TRUCK engine.

2. There seems to be digit missing from the quotes engine number. The interest is in the exact cut-off when LO engines switched to LP engines ready for the July 1 1928 change-over. So far we suspect that LP castings date from around June 21.

3. Although it is spelled 'CAPITOL', in Canada, it was also spelled 'CAPITAL'. Likewise, it was Series L.O. and L.P. [note full stops/periods].

Hello Oracle, I rechecked the engine numbner and found it indeed to be missing a 10.

Should have been:

bowtir 17
E248

Thanks, Maxie.
