I have a Stromberg updraft carb that was in a box of 490 and Superior parts. It would fit a Chev. intake manifold but I'm not familiar with Chevrolet using Stromberg. The brass base in marked R-1 and stamped with the numbers 301 45 38. What say the experts? chevy

Hi Tom,

According to the parts book (which is by no means the final answer) available carburetors were the Zenith, Holley and Carter. No mention of Stromberg.

Different subject: Is the vacuum tank on your 1924 F touring a G&G and is it plated or painted black?

Only pre-1916 did Chevrolet use a Stromberg carb. No documentation that a Stromberg was used on later models.

The G&G tank that I have is plated not painted. It is not mounted on a car.

Thanks for the replies. Either this could be an aftermarket item, or for some other car and just coincidentally would fit a Chevy.

The original G&G tank on my car was plated. It's been lost over the years, however. I thought they were all plated. Anyway, the one I have now I got on eBay and its plated also.

The Stromberg R-1 came out in 1924. It was available only in 1 physical size (size 1), although a number of different venturi were available. It was a transission between the series O (still being produced) and the series T.

There is no record in the Stromberg records of it being used by Chevrolet as original equipment.

I have a catalog that reads
Special
Stromberg Carburetor
Equipment
with hot shot for
Chevrolet-490
Instructions for installation and adjustment.
The catolog is red with black letters measures on the cover 9x11, and is nine pages dated 6 23 the number of the one in the book is OA-1. The cost was east of 105th Meridian $19.50 and West of 105th Meridian was $21.00 plus excise tax. Chicago. I guess Chicago had two tax structures? My brother bought the book back in 1978. I have never seen a carburetor or another book like this at a swap meet.

Stromberg, like many other carburetor manufacturers, offered replacement carburetors for many vehicles that did not use their equipment as original. Stromberg advertised hundreds of replacement carburetors. The OA-1 in question is one of these. Basically, the carburetor company (in this case Stromberg) would take a standard carburetor of the proper S.A.E. flange size (in this case model OA, size 1) to fit an aftermarket application. Then the proper venturi would be fitted to flow the proper amount of air for the engine; and the jetting would be calibrated for the volumetric efficiency of the engine.

The Stromberg part number for the OA-1 as retrofitted to Chevrolet was A-8411.
