i have read where several people use an electric fuel pump just to assist starting and when needed. at times in a parade or puttering along the coupe sputters and racing the engine for a second clears it up. question is, how do you intall a pump as a backup so it doesnt interfere wit the vacumn tank operation?

Place the electric fuel pump in a box and set it up on a shelf in the garage.

Doesn't sound like your problem is lack of fuel. Just the opposite most likely over fueling at low speed or idle.
With a vacuum pump increasing the engine speed reduces the vacuum which would reduce the fuel pumped. Just the opposite of a mechanical pump.
Likely racing the engine temporarily clears the rich condition. It is best to fix the problem not try to cover it up with an added thingy.

So what advice would you '28 experienced folks give someone with his problem of:
"...at times in a parade or puttering along the coupe sputters and racing the engine for a second clears it up."
Would cleaning and checking the carb be his first task? fuel line? fuel filter? or what?

Maybe, I would first look to see if the choke is parcially closed. Then see if hammering on the carb will fix it. ...Then if everything else ....(prayin', cussin', and beatin' the headlights off)...fails, maybe, just maybe, it is time to contact an old timey mechanic!
Gator I don't know if these are the way to fix the car, but I have seen a lot of people doing it that way, they always wait till everything else fails before looking for a qualified mechanic, trying to save money, don't you reckon?

I am having a simular problem with my 28 sedan. It runs great for about 5 minuets, then starts to die. If you pump the gas pedal it come back to life and the cycle repeats. I checked over the carb (which has been recently rebuilt), and found nothing. Now I am into the vaccume pump. It seems that someone "fixed" the flaot to the point where it would barley float, and seems to be sticking in the tank. I have ordered a new float, and will let you know if that fixes the issue.
Good luck and happy hunting.

We have had a number of customers have the vacuum check valve to the vacuum tank fail; causing raw gasoline to be diverted from the tank to the engine, bypassing the carburetor.

I had that type problem with one of my 1928s on the Crater Lake, OR tour. Once I discovered what the problem was, I would then disconnect and plug the vacuum line to the intake manifold. Discovered I could go almost 5 miles before it would start running out of gas. Just stop and reconnect the vacuum line and let it run a few minutes and was off for another 5 miles. When we finished that days tour I took the tank apart and repaired the vacuum valve seat. No more problems and finished an excellent tour.

I would suspect that the new float or cleaning to eliminate sticking will solve both problems. If the valve seat is loose super glue is a good adhesive to hold in place.

It may be best to put your vacuum tank in the hands or an experienced mechanic. However, instructions for rebuild have been placed on this forum and some kits and float are available from Gary Wallace.
