Hello all,

Someone asked me a question about the original colours of the 490's which I didn't have an answer for. Mine was definitely black, and all of the unrestored ones I've seen were also black. Were any other colours available when the 490 was new? I know the V8 came in green. Also, was the original paint Japanese Varnish?

Thanks!
Allan

It is my understanding that the 490s, to include my 1918 Touring, were black. I think you are correct on the varnish for the paint. The first year to use Lacquer was in 1925. Many colors were available starting with 1925. Colors were available for the Royal Mail and Baby Grand line of cars.

This is an interesting discussion, since my friends are trying to get me to paint my 1919 "Baby Grand" a color other than "black". Ray, and everyone else, what colors do you think were original "back then"?
Thanks

This is way out of my specialty, but I see maroon, green, and grey.

My '19 Baby Grand is painted green. Can't tell you that it was original as I did not strip off the original paint but the shop that started the restoration was a stickler for authenticity.
