I have a 1927 Chevy with a 1928 motor in it. I am currently trying to clean and paint the water pump, but am a little leery of taking it apart. I have cleaned it from the outside and it would be easier to complete the cleaning and painting if it were apart. It doesn't appear to have been leaking in the past, but would the seals get damaged if I were to take it apart?? Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
Part 2 of this question is, if it is deemed that I wouldn't create additional problems if I take it apart, how do I take it apart? There appears to be only the nut around the shaft that can be loosened and thats it, no other bolts.

Unless you want more trouble than you can handle, don't attempt to take it apart, unless you are doing a rebuild and have the kit. The only safe way to install the kit is to destroy the inpeller and shaft. If the baffle is still serviceable, leave it alone. You can add packing under the big nut without disassembly.

The pump can be taken apart and put back together without major problems if you know what you are doing and the pump is in good condtion. It takes a press. The shaft must be clean and free from any abrasive buildup or pitting.
From your question I would not suggest attempting it yourself.

There are several types of packing. Lead foil rings are the best, rope type water pump packing and teflon rope type packing are also available. I have used the first two very successfully. The latter is recommended by others.

If you are only adding material to a used pump, I recommend the teflon rope type packing available on the rack in your favorite plumbing store. Loosen the nut and pull it back and wrap as much of the teflon rope as you can in the cavity. Restart the nut and tighten. Insure that the pump will still turn and after operating for a spell tighten it again.

I like the Teflon rope packing myself and I have never used the lead foil stuff Chipper recommended. In a pinch I once used the rubberized tubeless tire plugging stuff that farmers use in implement tires, the stuff that you put in a large needle device and plug the hole from the outside with out dis-mounting the tires. It worked ok, I was just afraid it wasn't too kosher and may be a little abrasive.
