Picked up a G&G vac tank for $9.99 on ebay. Received it today and there aren't any holes and only a small amount of rust however I can hear what sound like loose material inside. Plan on taking it apart for a good cleaning and regasketing. I have a repair manual and parts list for the 23 Superior to work from. Looks complete according to the parts list. Looking for advice or cautions before starting. I've been in contact with several members and my TA since joining VCCA and I thought this might be a good subject for my first post.

Hi,

Completely disassemble the G & G tank. Glass bead all parts except the float. Check the big tank for holes. If any are found they should be repaired with solder or silver solder. If any repairs are made glass bead again. Blow out all components with compressed air to remove all traces of the glass bead. Coat the interior of the big tank with either white or red snot. (If you need help on the snot just conduct a search on this forum). Also coat the inner tank. Dip the float into the snot and leave suspended over the open can of snot for about an hour. Air dry all components for 3/4 days until dry/cured. While waiting for the snot to cure either make yourself a gasket from gasket material or purchase one. When the tank is reassembled mount back on the firewall. Turn the motor over with the starter for perhaps a minute, turn on the ignition and start engine.

Was your G&G tank painted black or was it plated? I have some of each. I have been told that the Chevy used the plated, but I am unsure.

By the way, do you have a touring or a roadster?

Interesting point cufrcp, I have never seen one plated. All my experience has been with the black painted tanks. Will start looking and see what I find.

I checked the tank and it was painted black on the front and sides but the back is clean and looks like it hasn't been painted. I checked the parts list and the picture looks like the tank is painted but I'm not positive. I have a roadster.

Thanks Ray for the detailed procedure.

The tanks (Three) that I have, have not been painted maybe it depended on when they were made or what assemble plant they were sent to mine are all from Southern California. They appear to have a cad. or a zink plating on them. The one good tank is on the car, and the other two are just good to look at. and it does work very well.
Good Luck.

Hi. I commented on this on another forum, but since this thread continues here, I'll restate my answer. My '24 tank was plated. (I say "was" because it was lost or unknowingly sold). My car was certainly assembled in California also.

Hi Tom, Thank you for your comment. I sometimes think that we know less, and less about our cars as time goes on. I am quite sure that as long as it is a G & G tank what difference does it make if it is painted Black or it is plated and who knows may be the west coast did it different than the other states. May be the replacements were black to cut the plating cost? As I was told in Springfield about the Baby Grand, Royal Mail valve covers some were nickel plated and some were painted Black the one on our Royal Mail is nickel I picked up another one a few years ago it still had some black paint on it. I respect all of the coments thatI have read on the chat line over my time of being on it, it has helped me in my restorations and I hope that I have helped someone with my comments and suggestions one thing that I am sure of, and this works for me and this goes up to todays cars being built today when there is a minor assemble line change like zinc plated bolts over black oxide bolts for some reason I do not think that there is someone standing there taking a note of it because our Vintage Chevrolets were the transportation car of the day and I do not think that any one ever thought about someone restoring it seventy five plus years later we can only do the best we can with the information that we have at hand. That is my three cents worth
