Earlier posts refer to a green color on the 1928 coach of Avenue Green (IM-953) with Black Moulding, gold stripe, and Dunsuir Gray (IM-21). There is also a Norse Gray scheme. My car which was reportedly "restored" in the early 70's is a green the seller refered to as "British Racing GReen" with black fenders and black from the bottom of the windows up. There is widespread cracking and peeling so I would ultimately like to repaint it. I like the green though so want to do the Avenue Green scheme.

Is the portion of the body from the bottom of the windows up the same green or is it black? Also, I've seen some reference on other models to "window insets" possibly a different color? Also, is the inset on the dash the gray or the green? Guidance on the striping would be helpful too....

Nothing is ever simple.

Your correct color is Avenue Green, with gold stripe, natural spoke wheels, Instrument panel is: Avenue Green with a black depression. Instruments sit in a white "splattered" insert.

You are correct in that the upper portion of the body is black.

I am getting ready to launch into paint and finishes on the body of my '27 AA 2 dr coach. The postings on the '28 coach refer to www.autocolorlibrary.com, which is a great reference for '28 and thereafter. Is there a site/reference for the '27, with paint reference numbers that I can take to my paint shop?

Unfortunately, NO, there is no specific location to check on the 1927. Your best bet, (as you are a member of VCCA) is to contact either the paint or 1927 Technical Advisor for assistance.

I would not recommend the VCCA paint technical advisor. He is in the paint business and will volunteer to supply the correct color paint. When quizzed about his documentation on correct paint formulations, he will tell you he has them but will not provide any proof. I have complained several times about the service but he still is the Tech Adv.

Your comments are not news to me. I have heard this from several sources.

Is it about time to take some corrective action?

I would hope that several people would contact Bob Hensel, TA Coordinator and/or their Area Board Member or Board Members At Large. They should have some experience with the Paint TA so they can relate their personal displeasure.

We have another source of paint info but he is reluctant to make the commitment to update his fathers info. He does supply the color equivalents determined some 20+ years ago. Some are no longer available.

I talked to representatives of BASF (R-M brand paint) at a recent car show. They are sending me mixing formula CDs and the contact for additional formulation information. I mentioned that PPG (Ditzler brand) was the only game in town for us Antique car restorers and that we could buy paint direct from them mixed to a matched formula. They said that they were interested in selling paint and we could also buy their paint direct. I have also heard for the past several years that DuPont was going to also update obsolete formulas but so far have not seen anything from them.

Back for a moment to the '27 2 dr. coach mentioned earlier. Bill Bradford, TA for the '27s, came through with the correct color specs for my model - Thanks, Bill! I dashed off to the paint shop (the one that takes its time for special jobs like this) but as they say, a picture is worth 1000 words, and they would very much appreciate a photo of the desired final product.

Could I trouble someone for a photo of the '27 coach with the correct color scheme, meaning St. James Gray (or La Force Gray - same thing) on lower body, hood, disk wheels, and dash; black elsewhere except for the Pistache Green on the body stripe (this is where the detailed photo would be very helpful!), and on the hood louvers (again, this detail is needed). There is also a disk wheel stripe of the same Pistache Green.

I will mention the recommendation of PPG paint.

Well, I will answer my own message, with a request for critical review of my assumptions.

Attached is a scan of a Feb 1927 ad showing a 2 dr. coach. I don't know if it is a '26 or '27, but the colors are pretty darn close to the black-gray-green combinations provided by Bill Bradford. What is helpful is seeing how the louvres are painted and the belt-molding done. The disk wheel striping is more difficult to pick up, but it shows better on an ad that I have from "Country Life", April 1927.

Comments appreciated! (a real photo would be even better..send to wlinton1@charter.net)

I hesitate to post Bob Hensels email address, however if you wish to address a comment to The Technical Advisor Coordinator you can send it to me and I will forward the comments to Bob.
