Hi Folks. I have recently purchased a 3 dr 490. I am looking for sources of information on the vehicle. I have a 1920's owner manual, but I would prefer to get a copy, or purchase one from 1916. I am also interested in the history and early pictures and so on.

I am a rookie, looking for help. I have contacted Mr. Meleo by mail (over a month ago) but to no avail. I am also looking for pics of the dash. I would love to come visit someone who has one of these restored/in process and get smart.

Thanks for all you help. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Greg Sullivan

Hi,

For starters, check all the normal places to find numbers on your car and post them here. You may have a dash plate, a number on the exposed flywheel, any numbers from the engine and head, is the engine Chevrolet or Mason?

You should be able to purchase an OM and a repair manual. Brochures are few and far between, but occasionally you may run into one. Also print ads would be helpful.

Thanks Ray!

I would like to get pics of the dash as original.

is the 3 dr rare?

I do not know how to tell if the engine is
Chevy or Mason? There is a number on the head, but I am on travel now.

It looks like it had a dash plate in the middle of the dash, but it is not there. I have a 490 plate, but that is it. I don't have a speedo, but a 5 inch plate filling a hole.

TIA
Greg S

Hi Greg S

There are a few things that will help tell you how early the car is. What type of front springs do you have? Are they the twin type duplex ( 2 0n each side ) or are they one spring per side.
Early 490s only have the 2 brush generator. Is the car fitted with a Conneticut Distributor?
Depending on how early the car is as to weather it had just the amp meter gauge as the oil site gauge came later in the 16 year.
Has your Radiator shell got the painted radiator badge and the big thermo syhpon radiator tank?
Your engine number will be under the exhaust manifold so you will have to remove it to see the number. There are lots of places to look on the car and you will be able to find dates but there is a lot of disassembly required. There should be a number on the flywheel that starts with a H. If you can email me a photo of the car I may be able to help further.
I have a fully restored 1916 Chevrolet 490 Roadster and have done a great deal of research on these wonderful little cars.

I have just finished a restoration of a 16 490 roadster and I found out it is very hard to find information about them. I contacted Dave from Australia and found more from him than I could here where it was built. I even worked at the plant in Flint, Mi. where they were built. I have a lot of the information you need. The head was cast on 4-17-16 & the motor number was 25560. It was built in Flint in the 4th week of May. Please call me at 810-638-5424. Lloyd Henige
