The former owner of my 1928 Chevrolet National reported having problems with the vacume fuel delivery system. After unsuccesfully trying to repair it, he removed the canister and replaced it with a small gravity feed fuel tank off of a lawnmower or something. He gave me the parts he took off. The fuel tank is rusty in the bottom now from disuse. How do I clean up the inside of the tank and go about troubleshooting the vacume delivery system?

The system is simple. It has several critical parts. If you have the original vacuum tank it will have four screws holding the lid. The lid has two valves with rods protruding out the bottom of the lid both with loops bent at 90 deg. to the rod. One opens to allow vacuum from the manifold to enter the tank. The other which works in unison closes the vent when vacuum is applied and opens the vent when vacuum is shut off (allowing the tank to drain to the carb.). A bell shaped brass float operates both valves. It is common for the float to crack and leak. You can purchase a reproduction from several sources or repair yours. The easiest method is to seal the cracks with gas tank sealer. If the cracks are too wide you can use tape to cover the cracks then coat a couple of times with the sealer. Another disc valve is located in the bottom of the inner tank to shut off when vacuum is applied and open to drain fuel to the outer tank when the inner tank fills. If those parts operate properly and the lines are hooked up correctly the vacuum tank fuel system will operate perfectly. Well, it will as long as the crud in the tank does not plug a line or get in a valve or ?

It is also very important to make sure the two breather holes aren't blocked 1. is at the base of the vacuum fittings on top of the top 2. is a small vent tube protruding out the edge of the top When putting the top back on I used a thick gasket and aviation sealer, which stays wet and isn't affected by petrol (gas) Chris

How do I go about cleaning the rust from inside the tank?

GLASS bead everything and then wash and air blow dry thoroughly. When perfectly dry, coat inside with white or red snot.

Bead blasting or nut shells or other minimally agressive material. The tanks are zinc coated so if too rusty it might be a good idea to recoat with gas tank sealer. You can use more agressive media if you are going to recoat. But becareful not to get any in the bottom valve.
