I have what im guessing is a 28 motor that im using in a speedster,The number stamped on the engine is T4819143 and cast into the block are the numbers 348532 with G28 8 cast under it,
I have been a mechinac for many years and I want to rebuild the motor but I would really like to what I have before I start. Any help would be great.

Tom, I do not have my serial number or casting number info handy but your casting date certainly suggests that you do indeed have a 1928 engine. G 28 8 decodes as follows: G is for July (A for Jan, B for Feb, etc.) 28 is for the 28th of the month and 8 is the last digit of the year it was cast. July 28th 1928. You have to know within 10 years to use the system.
1928 Chevy four cylinder engines were the only ones originally equipped with two exhaust ports in the cylinder head. Previous engines had a single port in the center of the head. Also, the 28 is the ony year the 4 cyl had covers over the pushrods. They were exposed on all earlier models. Good luck.

I agree that T4819143 is a 1928 left hand drive motor...it was from a 1928 Capitol Series LP 1-ton truck, and had a four-speed gearbox originally if it does not now. The casting date G-28-8 is July 28 1928. I know of another LP motor, engine # T4,814,548 block casting # 348532 but casting date code G-31-8 July 31st 1928 1928. I suggest that the trucks were assembled originally in August 1928, just after the Chevrolet dealers' '1928 Selling Season', i.e. for 1929 although as you know the 1929 Model proper were the nez 6-cylinder trucks, the LQ series.

don't know if this is light or dark to this string but my capitol truck, Car Number 3L0 8285 has block cast # 348582 Bowtie 11 cast date C 1 8
The stamp is T4164101 The truck has a 3 speed trany.
I was told that the "T" stamped blocks were also sold into the non auto market? The motor in the speedster may have come off a corn thrasher or some such.

The # 348532 block was the 1928 design from January 1928 onwards. The 'T' and 'TR' [for right hand drive Truck] motors had lower compression pistons and thus could easily have been used in agricultural machinery, marine craft, etc. There was also the very rare 'X' code motors which were low compression car motors used in light delivery chassis.

I've listed a few casting (not serial) numbers that I'm familiar with at: <http://la.znet.com/~c1937/Cast.htm>. .
. .#348532 is a 1928 Chev 4 cyl engine. Easily identified by the push rod cover surface cast in block and 2 exhaust port head.
