I'm getting ready to have my gas tank dipped/derusted and want to know what the concensus is here: should I 1. Just paint the outside and leave the inside bare metal? 2. Have it cad plated or galvanized before paint to keep the inside clean? 3. Use "snot" or other similar stuff inside?

Hi Tom, My recommendation is to: A. Have the tank professionally cleaned/dipped. B. Have the entire tank tinned. C. Coat the inside with the Red snot and allow it to air dry for 5 or more days. This subject has been hammered in the Teck Talk. (Forgot to mention. Tank is to be painted black on the outside prior to mounting).

I had my "19 FB" tank done by a "Gas Tank RENU" franchise. It leaked miserably when I got it back so they re-did it. I haven't put it back on yet due to the motor issue. It is coated with some very rough "snot" on the outside and now does not look very good. If you pay good money, make sure that you know exactly what they are going to do to it. John

Five years ago, I had my tank dipped and then I primed and painted it. Since then, the paint lifted from the primer and peeled off. I just dipped the tank again and had it powder coated. I have not re-installed the tank yet.

I used a kit available from Eastwood a couple of years ago. It wasn't that hard but it was time consuming. I followed the instructions to the letter. Took me several days. But I like the results. You only put the stuff on the inside. Paint the outside. It was alot less expensive than having it done commercially. On the other guy's tank, If the paint peeled last time on a tank it is because the chemical used to strip it wasn't neutralized properly. Stephen
