could some of you people educate a dummy?

when i bought this 28 coupe, i was told not to overtighten the waterpump. it seems like everytime i drive it, it loosens up less than fingertight and of course leaks. is this normal or am i just too scared to put an extra quarter turn on it?

Hi huffneff,

Tighten the brass nut "snugly", then loosen the fan belt, grab the fan and make sure it turns, but not hard. If you can turn the fan by hand then it is not too tight. If you have "run out of threads" on the brass nut you will have to rebuild the pump. After a period of time the packing will cut a groove in the shaft and it will be very difficult to stop the leak. Also, be sure to lubricate the bushing on the front of the water pump. That is the weak point on the 1928 water pump. Kits to rebuild your pump are readily available.

Hi Chevrolet,

Sure, except for the front bushing. It is possible to tighten the brass nut so tight the fan will not turn. That is the reason to loosen the belt and check it.

That's two words....or a double "YUP". Also, don't overtighten the fan belt either or the front bushing will become egg shaped in a hurry, as will the packing nut. laugh laugh laugh laugh

on the '30, is the brass nut & the bushing one in the same?..can't tell, as my water pump has been spray painted grey...

sounds like I'd want to tighten the pump bushing just enough to prevent water and air leakage, and the belt just enough to spin it?..

On the 1930 water pump, the packing nut and the bushing are not one in the same. There is a bushing in the front of the pump body right behind the pulley. There is also a bushing in the back of the pump body next to the impeller. Also, there are two types of packing nuts used.......steel and brass. laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh
