Thanks to all who replied. I follwed each suggestion. Here is the result: I checked the battery with the voltmeter. The voltage reading indicates the generator is indeed :) working properly. I suspect the "problem" is as Chevradioman indicated: when the alternator determines the battery is in a "charged" state it will reduce the current back to "zero". I feel relieved. Unfortunately, Im not as mechanically inclinded as I should be (with an old car like this), so if something doesn't seem quite right, alarm bells go off. It really is a great car - never winter driven since I've had it. Thanks again.
