Thought I would add this topic as I am at a stage to do this as well as electrical voodoo.

The repair manual is uninformative in identifying the various oils and greases to use.

Transmission and Differential - 600 w
(Is 85-140w the modern equivelent?)

Waterpump cup (I found nothing specifically for water pumps at Napa but got Sta-Lube multi-purpose marine grease. It is recommeded for water pumps among other things)

Question: Will this grease work for all grease cups to include front steering and rear wheel cups and distributor cup?

I peeked at the 29 section of the chat room and saw there seemed to be a specific grease for the distributor. Is there? and if so, what is it?

What grease is best for the alamite fittings?

To confuse the issue even more, I found an alamite fitting on top of the U joint. What goes in there? I've read (also in past chats) it needs a heavy oil rather than grease as the parts merely make a channel through the grease and become un-lubricated. What's the true skinny?

Thanks again, Dale

dale007,

there've been a few recent threads in th '29-'32 section that might be helpful, particularly some of the links to past discussions posted by chat members:

also, you can always do a search on a particular subject so you can go over the past postings on that topic...

Thanks Oilcan, I checked the treads provided and they were helpful. I had seen them before but wasn't sure they would apply to a 28. One thing that didn't seem to be explained was whether water pump grease was proper for the other cup grease applications (other than the distributor). The marine grease I mentioned indicates it can be used on wheel bearings, so it should be ok. Now I have to find a mult-purpose grease which specifically states it is for distributors, right?

Also, I got under the car yesterday and noted a heavy accumulation of hard grease covering the spring leaves front and rear. After removing the old, is there something I need to do to lubricate the spring leaves?

Thanks again, Dale

Clean the springs throughly and then leave them dry.

Lubricate the shackles with a multipurpose grease.

Just so I don't make a mistake, white grease from "LUBRIPLATE" is ok for waterpumps?

Lubriplate ,Fisk, makes a special waterpump grease, it is right for the 28 waterpump, You can order it from the Lubriplate site over the internet, I did. I would not use marine lubricant's or regular multipurpose chassis grease in the waterpump. You need a lubricant in the water pump that won't clog and contaminate the radiator and the coolant.

As for the Alimite fitting on top of the "U" joint housing, I saw in the repair manual that after the u joint was replaced, etc.. put the transmission lubricant in here, I forgot how much, after assmbly.. I would think it is an assurance that the u joint will be lubed???? and as the transmission operates the transmission will furnish lubrication for the ujoint. does that make sense????

If you are a member of the VCCA the TA for '28 would be helpful (use a SASE, name & address in the G&D).
