Could someone with a more comprehensive parts book tell me what diff ratios were available in 1928? I have come across two ring:pinion ratios. 46:11 and 42:11. I had the 46:11 in my coupe originally and it could pull stumps in high gear. Thanks! -R

46:11 and 42:11 were the only options available in 28, the earlier 4's didn't have an option and the 29 and onwards don't fit Chris

Very interesting. I wonder if they had different speedometer gears based on the two options? -R

There was only one speedo gear available for 28's. I'm pretty sure they were the same for all 21" wheel cars, as I had some (small one)reproduced a long while ago
There is something like about 15 mph difference in speed between the 2 diff ratios

I have been curious about the gear ratio in my 28.How could i determine what ratio i have.46:11 would have a higher mph ? :confused:
isn't 28 great

The most fool proof method is to take the rear cover off and count the teeth on the ring gear. That is not normally necessary. The alternate method is to jack up one rear wheel. Mark the wheel or tire. Shift the transmission to high gear, then rotate the engine four complete revolutions and determine how far the wheel has moved. If the mark has not moved one complete revolution you have the 46:11 ratio. If it has moved a little more than one revolution you have the 42:11 ratio. If you have a protractor you can move the engine one complete revolution, determine the degrees of wheel movement and then calculate how many revolutions of the engine to make the wheel turn one complete revolution. That will give the rear end ratio (360/degrees moved) in decimals. To convert to the ratio multiply by 11 (which will give the number of teeth on the ring gear.
