Hello All,
I just brought home (for better or worse!) what I believe to be a 1916 Chevrolet 490 Touring. Can anyone out there help confirm this? Pictures are posted at http://www.britishcarlinks.com/1916_chevrolet.htm along with some more info.
Any help, advice or other words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Allan

Hello. As I have a 490 Touring, 1916, I take the opportunity to give you some information:
The radiator apron looks familiar, but originally the Bow-Tie was painted on the metal. However, many(including me) put on the metal shield instead
to brighten up the front. The fenders are not 1916, as they do not have the shape of that year.
The headlight holders look familiar.
The engine is not a 16, as the top on yours is covering the valves. The number stamped on the outside, on the circle of the flywheel can tell which year if the wheel has not been changed during the years. The fan is not same as mine, while the knobs on the dash are right, same with the size of the missing odometer. The 16 has only 3 doors, I believe(only 1 in front. The left pedal is first working as clutch then as brake, while the right one is a parking brake. To help you better, I will send some photos of mine.
And yes, you should try to rescue this one, even if quite a lot is missing.

Hi Erling,
Thanks for taking the time to respond and sending those photos. I don't mean to be a bother but would it be possible to split the pictures up into a few E-mails and send them? My E-mail program doesn't like large attachments and cut off the photos. I'd love to see them. It sounds like my car might be a newer model?
I'll be checking the motor later to look for that date code.
Thanks,
Allan
P.S My E-mail to you bounced back so that is why I'm responding here.

I'm no 16 expert, however I can tell you that the engine and gearbox are 1928

Thanks Chris,
That's the type of info I need! It's too bad it's not the motor for the car like the seller told me. That's what I get for buying first and researching second!
I pulled the folllowing numbers off of the block:
  • 3925692 - serial number stamped into flat angled section of block.
348532 - cast into block below serial #
Bow tie symbol and the number 10 - below cast number
L29.7 - Below Bow tie symbol - is this the date code?

Does this tell you anything else?

I obviously don't need this motor/tranny set up anymore. What would be a fair price for them? $50? $100? $200? Would anybody really need them? I'd like to get them to somebody that can use them.
Thanks again,
Allan

The block is a 28 and the casting numbers indicate that it was made 12 29 27 hope this helps. If you are looking to sell the engine and trans. just put them in the parts for sale forum and put a price on them or maybe some one will have a swap for you. Good luck on you restoration.

To bring up to date we established over at ChevyTalk, basically through a group effort, that the car was a 1918 490 barn find! The engine was however a 1928 AB, although the head was off a late '27 AA. The question is now as to how many early cars are still out there in barns? A chopped-top '29 Canadian sedan has popped up and is available. Those barns have evidently still not been cleared out!
