Hi all, We are in the process of getting a new set of tyres for our old darling. My question is this: Which of the below selection would closest match the original tyres fitted to an Australian sold '28 Chev? Excelsior 450x21 Firestone Deluxe Champion Garfield Firestone USA Thanks, Tim and Naomi. PS, It currently has a very old set of Firestones on it, so old the tyre pressure guage refuses to read in KPA.

Tim, That is a good question, I would say try to see which tyre has the best reputation, some of the less expensive tyres are not too whoopie! I bought some Garfield tires and they appear to be fairly good quality. As to the tyre pressure guage, I always thought KPA meant, Keep Putting in Air!

OZ ,I bought a new set of Firestone 450 -21 tires for my 29 model A this last fall .I was talking to the guys at Universal Tire and they said that almost all antique tires are made at Denman tire at Leavittsburg,Ohio. that includes Goodrich as well as Firestone and some other brands .I think the Excelsior is made in India. The Firestones are real good tires full size with the old style tread ,they drive real good.Put Goodrich white walls on my 31 chevrolet they look real good. I think any of these brands would wear about the same due to the fact that they all come from the same place. The reason that they are made by Denman is they are the last tire plant that makes tires by hand .Hope this is of some help.

Some of the tyres (tires) are built in South America and others New Zealand. I have some Firestone tires built in NZ that I got a couple of years ago on my '28.

I have a set of NZ Firestones on my 28 and my 34. They are fantastic. I got 40,000 miles out off the front ones on the 34 and that runs knee action suspension which is hard on tyres. The ones on the back have done 50,000 miles and are half worn. Unfortunately NZ dosen't make tyres anymore, US bought them out. I have heard from others that the US Firestones are good for about 20,000 miles on a 28, which isn't too bad I guess. So I would recommend these. If you want new tyres then give John DeBrincat from Sydney a call 0n 0414 522 533 (AU. mobile) as he imports them direct from the US and is the cheapest in Australia. Steer clear of the Argintine made tyres, they aren't much good. Chris
