I recently discovered that my shocks have no resistance on my '29 Coupe. Should I just fill them with oil, and what type? How do I know if they need to be rebuilt? wink  chevy

There may be something better ,but i was unable to find any Delco shock fluid i used motorcycle fork fluid .It comes in several weights and does the same thing as a lever shock .It worked real good in mine .Other people might have other ideas but it worked for me.

Yes, Woody is correct, motorcycle fork fluid will work just fine, as well as any light weight hydraulic jack oil that you purchase in your local hardware store. If the shock absorber is leaking around the shaft at the packing gland, then it is ready for a rebuild. By the way, the Filling Station has now come out with 1929-32 shock absorber rebuild kits, and the kits include all of the parts needed for a complete rebuild. One kit will rebuild four shock absorbers, and they also have the fluid available as well! laugh laugh laugh

No. They were an accessory in 1929, and 1930 was the first year that the Delco-Lovejoy shock absorbers came as standard equipment. laugh laugh

Junkyard Dog,
Were the accessory shocks for 1929 the same as 30-32? I have seen different ones installed that appeared to be aftermarket with straps etc.- forgive my ignorance.  laugh

I don't have much information on the 1929 shock absorbers, except that they are listed in the 1929 sales data book as an accessory. I understand that the Lovejoy shocks for 1929 were the type with the woven straps, but I don't know for sure. Maybe some other dudes out there in Chevrolet Land can shed some additonal light on the subject.

No. On the 1930-32 shock absorbers the shaft is held in place with a bolt on the inside of the shock absorber housing. The instructions that are supplied with the rebuild kits give detailed, step by step instructions on how to rebuild the shock absorbers, and there is a photo that shows how the shaft is removed from the body. laugh :) wink :p

What do you do if the cam is not held in with a bolt? Like the later model cars had? Why don't you write an article for the G&D on this JYD? You're the best at writing articles! Agrin chevy

Why thank you Brucie! laugh laugh

On the later shock absorbers, the shaft is pressed into the cam, not bolted. :(

Yes, there was an article in the G&D that I did on rebuilding the shock absorbers. It was in the December, 1992 issue on pages 9 thru 13. laugh  laugh
