I recently discovered that my shocks have no resistance on my '29 Coupe. Should I just fill them with oil, and what type? How do I know if they need to be rebuilt?

There may be something better ,but i was unable to find any Delco shock fluid i used motorcycle fork fluid .It comes in several weights and does the same thing as a lever shock .It worked real good in mine .Other people might have other ideas but it worked for me.

No. They were an accessory in 1929, and 1930 was the first year that the Delco-Lovejoy shock absorbers came as standard equipment.

Junkyard Dog, Were the accessory shocks for 1929 the same as 30-32? I have seen different ones installed that appeared to be aftermarket with straps etc.- forgive my ignorance.

I don't have much information on the 1929 shock absorbers, except that they are listed in the 1929 sales data book as an accessory. I understand that the Lovejoy shocks for 1929 were the type with the woven straps, but I don't know for sure. Maybe some other dudes out there in Chevrolet Land can shed some additonal light on the subject.

Do the rebuild kits require pressing out the arm shaft? PS. Note the new Smilie!

No. On the 1930-32 shock absorbers the shaft is held in place with a bolt on the inside of the shock absorber housing. The instructions that are supplied with the rebuild kits give detailed, step by step instructions on how to rebuild the shock absorbers, and there is a photo that shows how the shaft is removed from the body. :) :p

What do you do if the cam is not held in with a bolt? Like the later model cars had? Why don't you write an article for the G&D on this JYD? You're the best at writing articles!

Why thank you Brucie! On the later shock absorbers, the shaft is pressed into the cam, not bolted. :(

Wasn't an article written on this in G & D some time ago??? I guess the advantage of being forgetful is that you are always meeting new people!! :(

Yes, there was an article in the G&D that I did on rebuilding the shock absorbers. It was in the December, 1992 issue on pages 9 thru 13.
