Well I got my 28 coupe on the road!!Well the engine runs good but there is a rough grinding kind of noise comming from the transmission area when it's in first and second when going down the road.I don't hear it in 3rd gear. It's either coming from the trans. or small unit right behind the trans where the drive shaft joins, I think? Any ideas what it could be and what I could do to remedy it? Oh yea, it says us 600 weight gear oil in the trans.? Where can I get that? The thickest I can find is 80-90 weight?

You should be able to get 140 or 160 from most major parts stores, Autozone, NAPA, PepBoys, etc. I get here at WalMart. If not them then try a oil distributor or jobber. Or you can get 600W from The Filling Station or Model A parts suppliers.

It may be just gear noise. They are straight cut gears and have a different noise than modern transmissions. If not that, I suspect a shaft or bushing problem on the intermediate shaft. A universal joint makes a clunk, clunk noise.

In the 48 years I have been driving my 27 it has always made noise in 1st and 2nd. In 3rd it is quiet. The 34, I once owned was noisy. My 30 does the same thing.

I was told many years ago that the meat packers of America manage to use every part of the pig, including the squeal which they put in Chevy brakes. Perhaps we now know where the grunt goes: 1st & 2nd gear! chevy
