This may have been covered before. What is the trick to removing the pulley from the crankshaft on a '24 Superior engine?

Hi Tom, That is interesting in that the normal situation is the pully is too loose. Take a look and see if there are two holes on the hub that are threaded and allow the use of a 'steering wheel' type puller. This is the preferred method.

I'm still a bit baffled in that I can't quite figure out what holds the pulley to the crankshaft. There isn't a nut on the front. Is the pulley merely a press fit on the shaft? With a woodruff key, maybe? If so, then I guess I need to do some soaking first since mine is quite rusty. The pulley has no threaded holes, but I have a sturdy 3-legged puller. Just keep up the pressure and wait for the "POP" ?

Hi Tom, Part of what you say is correct. The pully is PRESS fit w/key. GET A GOOD BITE WITH THE PULLER AND WATCH CLOSELY THAT YOU ARE NOT BENDING/BREAKING

Thanks for your advice! I didn't want to assume how to do this and wreck my parts if my assumptions were wrong! (I've done that before. It's not a great feeling to look at a broken part and think, "Oh...THAT'S how it worked!) I took my time and kept pressure on the pulley with the puller, used a lot of WD-40 and whammed the center bolt with a heavy hammer repeatedly. Every now and again, the bolt would allow itself to be tightened a bit more. Eventually the penetrating oil, steady pressure and banging prevailed and the pulley slid off easy as you please. My girlfriend thinks it wonderful and amazing that I can log onto this forum and get such fast and helpful advice about an 80 year old car. I do too. Thanks again!

Yes , Tom congrats. also one of the easyiest kept secrets around here is that there is a majic piece of information that all of us have and would not be without, And it is called a Shop Manual, or a Repair manual. (for your year vehicle) all the antique car parts vendors sell them, buy one !!! and... The Chevrolet Service bulletins for the year and the year after your car was built, handy and most valuable, makes you look like JYD and Chevy Nut and Raymond have been giveing you special one on one tudoring!

Chevy Acres sells reprints of Service News from '27 up to '57. Bob advertises in the G&D occasionally. You also can get them from the Filling Station. I don't know of reprints of Service Bulletins. Originals come up for sale rarely.

Actually, I do have a photocopy of an original repair manual AND a reprint, but neither were really all that clear on crank pulley removal. Maybe the writers just assumed that it was obvious. (Their grandchildren are writing computer software manuals now!) But I could not agree more on their value, especially when I've convinced myself I'll remember how something goes back together and then realize I've forgotten. (Pencil, paper & Polaroid help too!)

That's very well put Tom, I can relate to every word. Now if we can get Ray to share his secrets about fixing the loose pulleys I'll really be happy. I think the only thing holding mine on is the fan belt. I'm tempted to drill and tap the end of the shaft but if the cobalt drill doesn't break the tap probably will. I also want to add that I just tried something that my Car Quest Dealer said was better than WD-40 or Liquid Wrench for these nasty jobs. It's called "Sea Foam Fast Acting Deep Creep" and it seems to work great. www.seafoamsales.com I was going to tell Skipper and Don that it's also a good throat spray after drinking Coors but I think the ad guys are talking carburetors !!
