Try The Filling Station ( they are online) or Gary Wallace, also on line. As for me, I would check with the local independant muffler shop and see what he can do, then compare what it will cost there VS. buying a kit, and shipping it in then crawling around on the floor for 1/2 a day, I did that with my '53 and then ended up at the muffler shop anyway $250 + shipping for a kit then $40 to fix it right, He would have done the whole job for $115.

I must admit I did my share of crawling around under my 28 putting in the $165 kit but you do get the preheater stove that the air cleaner mounts to and the whole thing looks more correct than what I've seen out of muffler shops. I think the sets are available from several sources including the ones Mr Mack mentions above but the price is about the same. I have both Gary and Filling Station on my sources section, www.cybersurfers.net/~herb/sources.htm

Just installed one of the prefab kits as mentioned by "Herb" on my 28. Best description is: "It's the only game in town". It is "similar" to the OEM, but the workmanship leaves a lot to be desired. This problem has been mentioned to the fabricator and the answer was very close to the comment above. mad

Ok I did it,"bolt on"yes, OEM well... maybe. It's a good thing "I got a train"(I mean a brain). FYI thanks to all for the input it was all very helpful. It bolted up ok, but I had to add 2" of pipe from the manifold to extend the muffler below the brake tubes and the extra clamp looks dumb mad . I would like see how it was done from the factory. A picture would be nice wink . On dads28 there is a OEM muffler bracket on the cross member rear of the brake tubes. Has any one seen this? . Also this muffler seems a little loud  Maybe a steel wool injection to the muffler. dads 28

The original muffler on my 27 mounted to a bracket that came from the top of the frame. It had a thin steel band with a bolt on the end that passed under the muffler. So I would say the instal on your fathers 28 is correct. Mine went into storage in 38 and remained inside to this date. I am sure what I took off was original install.

Hi Dads 28,

Here's some pictures I took this morning.

My muffler is loud when I start the car in the garage but not bad on the road.
Regards,
Herb

I used to manufacture exhausts for Chev 4's, they were an exact copy of the original, including the 3 piece bolt together muffler and the accessory baffled tail pipe. I had new old stock examples and still have the 28 one.
Mine were a bit rough around the edges, but were hand made and were built to a budget.
Another VVCAA member has taken over the manaufacture of these and they are a very good unit, and would pass any judging test, from memory they cost about $200 AUS, which would be about $85 US.
The most important thing is that they perform as they are supposed to and they sound like a good Chev 4 should sound

Exhaust system "revisited".

Due to some recent questions on the 4-cylinder exhaust system, additional comments are probably in order.

As all of you have the Owners Manual for your vehicle, (you should have), look in the center of the book at the lubrication chart. Unless I missed something, none of the tail pipes extend back even as far as the rear axle. In each case the last tail pipe hanger is attached to the last frame crossmember in front of the rear axle. Another point is to observe closely the tail pipe. Note that it has two 'squeezes' along the length. One vertical and one horizontal. My assumption is that this was to either change the sound or provide additional back pressure.

The question has surfaced many times about a clamp at the junction of the heat stove and the exhaust fitting. I can find no evidence that one was used. This is a friction fitting, with some exhaust fittings having two grooves in which a rope type gasket was installed, and others with no provisions for a gasket. Actually, there is no reason for a clamp. The manner in which the muffler/heat stove assembly were secured served this purpose.

For a comprehensive discussion on the '25 Superior exhaust system, with pictures, see my article in the October '83 G&D on pages 21-22.

Hi All:

I am taking Ray's (very good) advice this time and asking first, it is amazing the things you see on E-Bay that say they are for a 1928 Chevy  ..

Ray, kindly, just did a great Job on the carburetor and distributor for the 28 and now the ol' auto is calling out for a good original style exhaust system that has the heat stove and such (unlike the replacement that currently resides on it).

Any update form the group on this thread? Anyone find/share any good sources?

Chevyguroo, anything from down under?

Best,

Joe

I can supply photos of a NOS 28 system, however the 28 RHD system is quite different than the LHD US models as we have a steering column in the way.
I made my own (exact copy from Service News photos) for my LHD coach and it looks the part.
I did speak to the bloke who makes them and he would be willing to give it a go, using mine as a sample.
As the US/Aus $$ goes up and down, prices may vary from time to time, plus shipping would not be cheap.
The systems from 16 to 27 are the same in Aus as US
Let me know and I'll see if it can be done.
I'll be away for a week, off to Bendigo Swap, Aus. biggest and best
By the way, the original systems were pretty crude and the metal was very thin, our repros are made from a heavier guage metal
I can supply photos of all system components for single port systems and Aus 28, from my NOS examples, and the back bracket as well, however someone would have to post them
