Technically, there should be. In most cases, it has been removed. You should be able to peek down into the neck with a flashlight and see if its there. I don't know the correct temp to use though. Others will probably chime in soon. chevy

Good luck on your project!

Hi dads 28,

The outlet is much larger on the 28 engine than previous 4-cylinder engines. This was to provide for a thermostat. It is held in position by a "U" shaped bracket and secured with two brass screws. The thermostat is 145 degrees. Unwittingly, most thermostats have been removed thinking it would make the engine run cooler, when just the opposite is true. With the thermostat installed the engine runs at a more stabilized temperature and is LESS likely to overheat. Agrin

Now the question - Can you still purchase a thermostat to fit into the neck of a '28? I have seen the ones that go on the hose but do not want to go that route.

Hi Qman,

Standard Chevrolet thermostats fit nicely in the special housing for the 28 Chevrolet. Obtain the lowest temperature thermostat you can find such as the 145, 160 ect. (That is assuming you can't stumble on to an original and functional thermostat). laugh

Hi dads 28
I took a picture of the housing and various parts that I used for my 28. Click on
www.cybersurfers.net/~herb/rmo2.htm
I drilled a couple of #20 bypass holes on the rim of the thermostat to assure circulation. The original had one small hole.
