Hi to all! I am cleaning up my hand control rods for my 1920 490 touring and they were for the most part rusted. I thought this odd as the majority of the car had a fair amount of paint on it. I think I found a couple of traces of nickle plating on the portion that came into the inside of the car. The portion that runs through the engine compartment is bare metal, still shiny under the sludge. So were these rods plated ???? Thanks for your help.

Hi 490k, I have a fairly original 1918 490 and I find that the portion inside the car was nickle plated and that portion inside the engine compartment was painted.

Thanks Ray. Guess now I have a lot of polishing to do to remove the pits on the rods. Was anything else plated other than the hubcaps, four grease cups on the front end, ring around the speedometer, and the ammeter. Also a few fasteners on the windshield ? I want to count all my eggs before I go looking for platers. :cool2:

Hi 490k, Now you are taxing my imagination. Although the hubcaps were plated they were painted black on the end, don't plate the speedo, but do plate the oil gage surround, plate the cover to the dash light, plate the headlight doors, and that just about covers it. All plating is nickel.

Ray and 490K, I'm going to follow up on my comment and say that I don't think the spark and throttle control rod on a '20 & up "490" are plated. I believe they are painted for these years.

My headlight rims are painted, but as I looked them over I found one has all radii for it's corners. The other one has beveled corners. Which one is correct? On the Oil pressure gage my housing was painted but it looks like the bezel holding the glass was plated? Can thay plate with the glass in? It looks like the glass is leaded in. On my control rods I think there is enough evidence of plateing and the copper base to say they were plated. Thanks for the input!!!!

The 490 headlight rims have the beveled edges. The other one may be a model t. The trim piece holding the glass on the oil guage, amp guage is plated.

Hello from the Grinch, Our 1919 490 was an original car one owner the levers were nickel and the head light rings were painted, the car was parked in 1934 and it only had 12000 miles on it, I have a picture of the first owner standing next to the car and write to his grandson in Washington state. It is good to see the new interest in the early cars especially the 4 cyl. Larry :)
