He.
I have never know that the are an overdrive transmissions for 1925 to 1929 trucks?
I have several old truck transmissions, but NEVER
seen an overdrive one!!!
I have put a 29 pinjong and ring gear into my 26 truck.
The -29 have 39/8=4,87 revolution
The 25-28 have 38/7=5,42 or 38/6=6,33
This conversion moves the truck 5 to 8 km/h faster. The pinjong and ring gear fits straight on.

Hi Kevin and Arvid,
To my knowledge the Johnson Overdrive will fit any 1916 to 1931 Chevrolet Car or Truck, but I have not met anyone who has installed one in a Truck. If you click on the Overdrive Section of my website www.cybersurfers.net/~herb/overdrive.htm
it contains about all I have on this overdrive. The photos shown the installation in my 1928 Roadster. If you need additional information I can call Tom Meleo and post his answers here.
Regards,
Herb

I heard that Tom was making reproduction Johnson Overdrive gear boxes and would be offering them for sale soon.
I know that Mitchell, Box 236, Healdsburg, Ca. 95448, 800-859-2088, 707-433-8329, offers modern aluminum case units that splice into torque tubes.
West Falls Mach., Box 297,11692 E. Main St., Aurora, NY. 14052, offers
Borg Warner overdrive units that fit in Torque Tubes.
Advanced Adaptors, 1645 Commerece Way, Paso Robles, Ca. 93477, (805)238-7000 offer a unit that fits between the trans and bell housing. Unfortunately the shift lever is on the left side of the case that interferes with the clutch and brake pedal opperation.
I've done research on trans mission and rear end ratios for 1927 - 1960 Chevys and have it on web page < http://la.znet.com/~c1937/RPM.htm >, if you would like to look.
Good Luck, Lou

over drives are made for any 4 cyl chevrolet even trucks. Oh by the way an over drive probably takes over 3 hours to install seeing that you have to cut the drive line to make it fit. I figure it's a good day job.

My previous post was meant to poke fun at the "advertising" for the Johnson Overdrive on Herb's web site.

In fact, it took me several weeks to install mine by the time I shortened the driveline, torque tube, and fabbed up the new brake bracket.

I agree with Rusty and mdtractor, It probably took me at least a day just to do the brackets for my 28. I guess the advertising guys were as over optimistic in 1927 as they are today. Keep in mind however, that they expect the installer to have the resources of a Chevrolet Dealership at their disposal.

I have seen the Mitchell Overdrive that Lou mentions and I think a lot of Model A guys are using them. The plus for the Johnson unit is that it's on the back of the transmission and was actually offered as a Chevrolet Dealer Installed Option in 1927 to 31.

A replacement chrome moly steel driveshaft is now in production in overdrive and standard lengths, and should be available from several vintage sources before the end of the year. Also axles have been available for some time.

Herb, You gotta remember that that ad was written back in the Roaring Twentys, and those dudes weren't distracted by TV, WWW, and other electronic foolery, I bet they could really do a overdrive in 3 or four hours. I have been watching some old Harold Lloyd movies from that era and he can do some marvelous things! and don't forget Tom Mix and Hoot Gibson!

Thank's to Lou ,mdtractor and Mr MACK for all your suggestion's and input regarding overdrive's.I will have to sit down now and figure out which way to go with it.I hav e another option of adapting a "DODGE 4 " diff centre into the chev truck banjo housing, this will give me a diff ratio of 4.166:1.
It will mean getting new axles made and modifying the torque tube, but if it work's out I will let you all know via the chat page.
Once again, thank's from down under for all the suggestion's and thought's.

Your's Sincerely,
Kevin Smith. chevy
